When I see photos of EV batteries, they're cylindrical, like AA batteries. Why? Wouldn't a shape that tesselates pack better?

@blp from what I remember from my brief experience in the battery industry: the form factor is mostly optimised for an easy production process.
The loss is packing space is usually used to manage temperature (i.e. not fully lost space)
