Question about #zoonotic transmission of #covid specifically with #Dogs

The person who usually helps me with my dog went and got covid (basically on purpose, I'm so angry, but anyway) - if he tests negative on rapid test but hasn't had a PCR recently, do you think it's safe, for my dog and for myself, if he watches my dog at his home for a few hours?

The CDC updated their guidelines this spring, but they're so laissez-faire with humans I don't completely trust them.

@callisto If it's been more than 14 days since he first tested positive, he's unlikely to still be contagious. PCR tests can continue coming up positive even well after the person is no longer contagious, and the evidence available doesn't seem to indicate much likelihood of transmission after 14 days even when testing positive.

Fig. 4 in this paper shows viral culture (infectious virus) flatlining after about day 14 post-symptom onset.

@callisto 14 days may be a good guideline — certainly better than the CDC's 5 days — but there is a long tail. When I had Covid in May I was testing positive on rapid antigen for 24 days post-symptoms (28 days post-exposure). I assumed positive on a RAT meant contagious, so I stayed isolated for that time.

@callisto On the question of zoonotic transmission: This 2024 article says pets infecting people is "very rare." https://www.webmd.com/covid/pets-coronavirus
