I don't usually post politics on this account but I thought folks here might be interested in this one

Bill Shorten is on RN Breakfast with PK talking about the new myGov ID proof of concept that starts in December

Stressing it's voluntary, the idea seems to be that you log into your myGov app, scan a QR code and it verifies who you are so you don't need to hand over ID documents. He mentioned the example of applying for a rental property

Also announced that they are taking an open source approach and will release the code for it

I've probably got some of this wrong but interested in what people think?

@PaulfromOz Hmmm, not sure. I have the Qld Digital drivers license (as well as the physical one), and can see some use for a safer way to identify yourself, esp. if it means that ID isn't stored by a third party (like a real estate agency, store, etc), but I'm also leery of something that critical being in a format that if leaked could be disastrous.
