I noticed that the "write" command is available on my Ubuntu machine. I don't think I've used it since 1980. Has anyone found a use case for it, or "talk", in recent memory?

Sorry if this has already been discussed. These are difficult words to search for.

they don’t really have a place in modern computing. They were useful when people logged into servers to use the command line, and resources were shared among users. Nowadays, on the client, unix and linux machines are single user. The server uses container technology which segregates one user’s system from anothers. Also, better ways to communicate were created, with IRC being one of the earliest
