I remember reading this when it came out. No longer my favourite Banks novel, but still the one that got him noticed and led to all the great novels that followed.

@sebrose Back then I bought books mail order from Mark Ziesing. He would occasionally say, “Buy this”, and I dutifully did. One time it was /The Wasp Factory/. Another was /Shadow of the Torturer/.

Even if he hadn’t given me good books to read, I see that those first editions are worth a pretty penny now.

@marick I've never had either as a first edition. In fact I'm not sure I own either of them at the moment. But, due to a recent episode on the "Genre Wolfe Literary Podcast", I'm revisiting early Brautigan, courtesy of Ebay.

@sebrose You don't have a copy of Shadow of the Torturer? The only way I can believe this is that you read it until it fell apart?

@jezhiggins @marick many copies have passed through my hands, but I have a habit of lending books out... without having a habit of getting them back :)

I do have electronic versions on my kindle though.
