The left Control key on my keyboard has been acting wonky for a long time. It finally starting coming off entirely yesterday. I stuck it back on but something was wrong and it kept coming back off.
Today I pulled off the right Control key to compare and it turned out that the two little wires on a clip on the keypad were supposed to fit under little retainers on the keyboard itself. I've now fixed the left Control key properly and I hope that it will give more years of service.

@blp what kind of keyboard was it? I can’t remember the last keyboard I’ve seen that has a stabilizer under the control key.

@sysop408 MX Keys. And I was wrong about it being fixed. It broke again immediately. I switched to a backup keyboard.
