My Pocket 386 arrived! (and no, 386 within its name is not just a coincidence) #freedos #pocket386

...and I was able to install FreeDOS there, thanks @freedosproject for the article regarding how to workaround the issue with LBA! Also, I wondered how to make work the USB driver to access my flashdrive, at the end, this part was very simple 😉

Why waste a 386 on DOS when you could be running Lin---

(But I'll be honest and say that if someone gifted me one of those, I'd probably put *nix on it. Or maybe OS/2.)

@suetanvil @freedosproject Well, it is definitely an interesting idea to run some antient Linux version or Unix on it 😉 But Linux is already both: my job and hobby, I spend the most of my workday with it. So I wanted to try something different, and FreeDOS is actually very interesting project, I enjoy experimenting with it 🙂 It may sound strage, but for me DOS is something new 😅

I'm just barely old enough to have used DOS as a development and target platform (university paid internship) and that was a miserable experience. Switching to Linux when I could was such an improvement, hence my biases.
Of course, it's also really simple and gives you easy access to the bare metal, so it's a great toy.

@suetanvil @freedosproject Sure, I follow. By the way, I just discovered this: https://news.itsfoss.com/pocket-z-linux-pc/ - it looks like a cool project targeting Linux (depending on final price).

Neat.
There's also the Clockwork Pi uConsole and DevTerm.

I've ordered a uConsole but the turnaround is 90 business days so it hasn't arrived yet.

@trilobyte What is it for, old classic DOS games?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from hroncok@floss.social
@hroncok I think old DOS games will be the most common use case. I also plan to play some, but I found recently that experimenting with FreeDOS is a hobby I can relax with. Just to write some text with no distraction from other apps... Writing some code while keeping in mind it is a 16-bit OS is also fun... 🙂 (And Pocket 386 works great with FreeDOS.)
