we decided we want to hack the original Apple ][ Number Munchers to quiz us about Mersenne primes
are there any good debugging emulators for the platform? fceaux for the NES is amazing, something with even a tenth of those features would be great

it's a little difficult to tell whether there's much of an Apple ][ hacking scene in the way that there is an NES hacking scene, any good sites for it would also be very welcome

this research is taking us to a lot of sites we visited in the 90s, which is interesting

some of those sites are ftp-style file archives with multiple mirrors and text files that list what's there. happily, we know how to explore these and find what we want, from childhood
unlike in our childhood, it's viable to just download the entire archive as a tarball and grep it. so that's an interesting wrinkle

because we're waiting while a complete archive of the Apple II Documentation Project downloads, we actually have to WAIT for the download (currently 5 GiB into it)
it's so nostalgic. reminds us of when we'd review the index file and queue up the three downloads we most wanted to see that night, reviewing each as it finished...

downloading the entire thing would have been seen as strongly antisocial back in the day (it uses bandwidth others could benefit from; plus if you have the resources to store ALL of it, you should volunteer to host a mirror)
that's clearly not the case today or there wouldn't be a tarball, but it still has us feeling nervous :D

it's looking as though what we want is to connect gdb to mame, possibly. hmmm.

@irenes i could not find a way. You may check a2trace though? (for cc65 programs)

@colin_mcmillen thanks - well, the thing we're trying to do is reverse-engineer commercial software, so we don't get the luxury of choosing how it was compiled, but it's good to know for other stuff
