spent several hours watching youtube videos of cars and car interiors to try and find the suitable shortlist of cars that will fit 5 adults and not cost $100,000. CarExpert guy has a great consistent review format including 2nd row seating.

also, car prices have gone up a lot in the 3 years since we last looked at cars 👎🏻

this has started a chain of getting on the blower that I'm not entirely comfortable with..

a fun piece of info is that leases for ev and phev cars can be 100% fbt exempt allowing finance to be bundled pre-tax.

also fun, we can probably offload our current lease car (suzuki vitara turbo) for more than the current balloon value.

we might be moving on this quicker than thought.

we took 4 of our 5 humans for a squishing-in-cars journey and ruled out a lot of cars. weirdly even the EV9, massive whale that it is, is still hard to fit 5 adults in.

seems likely that the MG HS +EV might be our best option for now. 50km-ish EV range will do for the daily driver needs, while also meeting budget and squishing humans. better than our current vitara, costs approximately the same on-road as a replacement vitara, but also eligible for the EV lease benefits.

the next test is another drive, and bring it home to fit in our appt parking space and still be able to exit the vehicle. while we have an unusual parking space right now, we’re unlikely to ever not live in an apartment again, so needs to be manoeuvrable and small enough to fit a variety of whacky spaces

yeah, i have a bunch of competing targets, it’s a challenge to hang around outside the bell curve, but most of my life has been like this in one way or another 😅

test drive of the MG HS+EV was great, the car fits in our parking space (and by extension, nearly any apartment parking space in future), we did a quick practice of the intended daily park-and-plug process, successfully crammed the adult kids in the back for a 30 min drive, and signed a deposit/hold/intent to buy thingy.

email to rental agent to get approval for a 10-15A socket installed, that’s the biggest challenge now.

sigh. free stabbing in the eyes to the car leasing/dealership/etc who keep saying 'oh, sure, this is easy' .. and then makes it decidedly not easy.

similar eye-stabbings for the rental agent to responded to my request for a quote to get a power/charging point installed by just asking me for the quote with my own copy/pasted words, and calling the owner a 'Rental Provider'.

getting quotes to offload our old car and close out that lease and one of the organisations want my 'registration papers as proof of ownership' .. err, mate it's 2024, 'papers' don't exist.

of course, I also have no idea how to prove I own the vehicle. I have no receipt or anything except a listing on VicRoads showing that it is registered to me, but that's not a verifiable credential I can provide to anyone else.

what a whacky world we've built.

in further eye-stabbing-incitement, the ‘easy’ process has been further delayed by:

in better news, the car is insured and registered at least.

oh, and unsurprisingly i am yet to receive a single callback from any electricians to get a quote for installing some kind of charging.

after losing the car for a bit, the dealership reported it as on-site on Monday, to be ready for handover today.

.. no, it was not ready. Some/all of the aftermarket stuff hasn’t been applied in the 3 days they’ve had it ..

we have a car! we have to take it back for a bit on Tues as the dash cams got put in, then the tinting got done .. so the tinters just ripped the rear cam off and left it rolling around in the boot.

sat around in the car messing with all the bells and whistles. maybe one of the rear fog lights doesn’t work? but have at least sorted out some interim charging ‘infrastructure’ so that we can charge daily without much effort and with tacit owners corp approval as the onsite rep was helping us ☺️
