I made a thing! (inspired by @bert_hubert who wanted to measure mains voltage waveforms)

And here is the thing in action. Are you scared yet? 😉

Btw there's more than meets the eye here. Do NOT (NEVER) connect the mains directly to audio inputs. Duh.

@alzimon correction: please DO connect XLR to main power or even 64A - it's fun, you will have sooo much magic smoke :nkoWhoaa:

@alzimon Nice! I’ve been toying with the same idea but haven’t made it past the pen and paper design stage. I’d love to hear which approach you’re taking.

@jeffpc While I totally trust this design for my own use, I don't want to encourage other people to do dangerous things. But basically it's a voltage divider using only resistors. If that sounds somewhat dangerous, it is. Unless you explicitly design and build for safety: isolation, distances, failsafes... And even then people will frown.

@alzimon That's fair. When I was searching around online for other people's ideas, I saw some "creative" ways to look at mains power. I concluded that I'll use a transformer to get 5 or 6V AC that can be fed into an ADC or somehow other circuit for processing and subsequent logging by a micro.

@jeffpc Yes, a transformer is what I would prefer too! It's also more compatible with unbalanced inputs (I'm using a balanced audio input). But transformers have inductance and may act as filters that distort your measurement. You need to pick the right one.

@alzimon @jeffpc Mhm. For version one of my project, I’d be ok with just measuring the frequency. So, the filter behavior shouldn’t be much of an issue for me. While it would be fun to get a nice digitized waveform, I’m not sure what that would be useful for. Even the frequency tracking is of questionable utility :)
