If there is a thing that will make me rage quit the industry, it's going to be #git or more accurately git submodules.

Apparently I forgot to share this story from last weekend's ARRL #VHF #hamradio #contest

I was trying to work Tom (AC1J) ~70km north of us on 1.2GHz. 10W and a discone antenna wasn't enough for SSB. We could both hear a voice in the noise, but not enough to log it. Unsurprisingly, Tom suggested Morse code. I told him that we didn't have a key at the station (we all forgot to bring it) but that I could on-off key an FM carrier using the foot switch.

2 minutes later, I had him in the log :D

For example, one of the functions takes a sample rate as an argument. It then proceeds to assume it is 11kHz except in one place for one mode (JT4 where it appears to resample from 12000 to 11025, I think). This assumption exists in the code by use of 12000 as needed (and other related values, e.g., 24001 meaning the first sample of the 3rd second) instead of defining a nice constant. 🤦

PSA: If you are someone who values clean code, do not look at #wsjtx decoding code. It isn't great, but I guess that's pretty standard for #hamradio software :(

I should clarify. This is W1XM being silly due to boredom. If you want to get other modes on 50MHz, 144, 222, 432, or 1296 let me know!

If you are in the Boston area, you can try to work W1XM on 1296.065 JT65-A. #hamradio #contest #vhfcontest

IMO this write-up talks about a pretty straight forward history spelunking, but it is nice to see it written down for those that haven't done it or haven't considered the power of having access to the code. It pains me when #OpenSource projects chose communication channels that don't have long-term persistence properties like email does. (E.g., anyone can subscribe to a mailing list and keep a copy of every message.) Good luck doing that with discord, etc.

Looking at my recently cleaned bike chain, I'm puzzled how quickly the black crap appears. That is, blackcrapogenesis confuses me. #cycling

Today, I combined two hobbies: #electronics and #cycling. I was curious about whether I could measure the temperature increase of the indoor trainer during a ride. I used a #LMT87 -based multi-channel temperature probe circuit (intended to monitor my server).

The circuit reads the 3 sensors every ~2 seconds using a 10-bit ADC (8x over-sampled) and dumps them over serial to the laptop.

It worked. My 152W avg kept it 2-4°C warmer in the sub-freezing outside air!

Obviously, I need more data 🚴

Wow. ABR Industries is an even bigger spammer than I thought. Back in October, they sent me a promo email even though I never gave them my email address. I ranted online and unsubscribed. Well, I just received another promo email! So, to recap: ABR...

  1. scraped my email address (likely from qrz.com)

  1. spammed me

  1. ignored my unsubscribe request

  1. spammed me again

I braved the cold today and went on a #SOTA hike. This time, the goal was to get the 7 points Mount Cardigan (W1/HA-012) had to offer (4+3 bonus). The wind at the summit was gusty and cold. I couldn’t find a place that was both sheltered from the wind and compatible with an EFHW antenna. So, I (somewhat stubbornly) stuck with the 2m FM on the handheld while hiding from the wind behind the tower. It took nearly an hour but I succeeded at getting the 4 Qs. #hamradio

Good job, you AI fad chasing idiots. I hope you enjoy getting 403 from my server for every request for every domain for the next few years. #sysadmin

Sigh. I just blocked 1867776 IP addresses in my nginx config. This includes 8.208.0.0 - 8.208.255.255 which seems to belong to Alibaba. If you crawl my server aggressively and use a user agent that pretends to be a real browser, I'll just block you by IP. This brings the total number of blocked IPs to 1975809.

I have a Google Alert that I set up in 2008 or 2009. In the beginning it used to be quite useful, but after a few years they more or less stopped showing up for mysterious reasons.

Well, this month (yes, it's only the 8th), I got two alerts. Google is telling me that there is a new result for the search term... Both times, it linked to a diff on my server that's been there for about 10 years. 🤦

ABR Industries just sent me a promo email. I've never bought anything from them or given them my email address. This makes it really easy to cross them off my list of potential coax vendors without even having to decide if their products are good. #spam #HamRadio

Yesterday, Bob (AC1Z) announced the 3rd annual W1 #SOTA Winter Bonus & Summit to Summit Weekend Event. It'll take place on December 7th and 8th.

This is a good way to get a bunch of New England summits in your log!

Is there a way to override /etc/newsyslog.conf values in #FreeBSD without modifying the file? If I add a file with the modified line into /usr/local/etc/newsyslog.conf.d/foo.conf, it rotates the log twice - and since the first rotation creates an empty log, the second rotation results in an empty log.

Specifically, I want to increase the number of maillogs a bit.

BTW, I use timestamped filenames. That is, crontab has: newsyslog -t DEFAULT
