One of the things I like about #mastodon is that one can follow hashtags. It might not be a foolproof method but it is a more transparent way than algorithm heuristics to see posts from people you don't follow. The user is still in control!

I'm hoping that the path shown by ekg paves a way for a new kind of #emacs applications. Where the data is kept in an sqlite db. So it can more easily intregate with the rest of the world (at the cost of flexiblity).
