It's almost relieving realizing that excellent, professional translators get bitten by false friend loanwords too. I've been reading The City and Its Uncertain Walls, and it took me almost until the end to realize that the character described as constantly wearing a Yellow Submarine "parka" indoors is wearing a hoodie. 「パーカー」 ("parka”) is a hoodie - AFAICT Japanese primarily uses 「アノラック」 ("anorak") for what we call a parka in English.

Ran into an interesting macOS failure mode today. I just got an old Mac/Windows hybrid CD, with the Mac slice being HFS for Mac OS 8/9. macOS refused to mount the disc - couldn't recognize old HFS, but at the same time it refused to mount the Windows slice either.

If I can offer one bit of advice as a washed-up Bush era leftist it’s that getting smug over factually-wrong laws does nothing. Like the “he declared everyone is female” thing. They don’t need the justification to be real, they’ll do it anyway.

Being smug over getting to correct something feels good and can make you feel like you've done something, when you really haven't.
