I'm trying out self-hosted UnifiedPush. I couldn't figure out how to get it to work with Tusky. The instructions were "install the ntfy app". Okay, and then what? How do I tell the Mastodon server where my self-host is?
...Tusky bloody set it by itself. I'd told ntfy where my server was, Tusky got that from ntfy and passed it to Mastodon. I was already getting UnifiedPush notifications on Tusky.
Which was impressively well integrated! But it may not hurt to ask before sharing my server URL.

"It's literally impossible to spend a billion dollars in a lifetime."
You could rent out every billboard in America for four weeks and write the word "balls". This isn't a capital investment, it's entertainment. It would cost you 26 billion dollars.

"He really phoned it in with this manifesto" How do we know it was a manifesto? Maybe it was just a note. He even said he wasn't going to bother to make the full case because other people did it better.

me: The web relies far too much on javascript. I have javascript turned off by default, and shall enable it sparingly!
website: I rely on javascript so much that I will not even display without it.
me: Oh, by all means then.

I sort of assumed I had a slow laptop, and that VMs are inherently heavy swap activity. So I thought it just came with the territory. All the same, I would suspend a lot to spare my drives. But now, totally silent, even with browsers running.

I upgraded #QubesOS a few weeks ago, reinstalling from scratch. I think there are significant performance improvements on my Librem laptop. I've been hesitant to say this because I thought it might be related to it being a newly refreshed system, or switching to uBlockOrigin. But even with browsers not running, in my previous installation I could hear what sounded like constant light hard drive activity. Not to mention a lot of fan activity, though again uBlockOrigin might account for that.

I am surprised how well Madonna's Ray Of Light holds up. (It's probably the only Madonna album I would buy.)

We're really only used to balancing 1) and 2). But what if, just as an experiment, we modulated 3)?
What if we made an absolute bare minimum decentralized project. Doesn't matter what it is. But we cut absolutely zero corners on decentralization, but still gave it good usability? Could we build and deploy such a product/app/etc to a wide audience?
I don't know what it would be. Maybe it's a decentralized "Yo". Except, it would have to be actually useful.

It seems to me that #decentralization projects, particularly radical ones, often have a certain pattern. It starts with a grand vision of full decentralization and wide adoption. Then real development starts and corners are cut "for now" for pragmatic reasons. There aren't enough developer resources to make the fully decentralized version user-friendly enough for a wider audience.
So we're balancing 1) decentralization vs 2) usability and 3) developer resources.
Well, I had a thought:

@wjmaggos Since you like to talk about (let's broadly say) an alternate economy for music, I wanted to point you to a couple things I recently heard about:
bandwagon.fm - bandcamp-like site for the fediverse. Created by @benpate
subvert.fm - plans for a cooperatively owned bandcamp-like site. Found on hacker news, not on the fediverse now afaik.

Trying to figure out what the "level" tag really means in #OpenStreetMap. As best I can gather, it means "what you would call the level if you were in the UK and there were no labels on the building except for those related to superstition"

"You should try real tomatoes from the garden not that manufactured grocery store crap"
I'm enthusiastic about this, but it occurs to me that the garden ones have still probably been bred considerably from their wild form. I wonder how those compare.

Negative points for pandoc: It's not reverse compatible. I upgrade my OS, my presentation formatting breaks. I have to take time to learn pandoc enough to un-break it or just install an older version.
