On a purely stylistic level I really dislike the term "enshittification": it's unimaginative, lazy, as ugly as the process it describes (hence, probably, its success). We had way better contenders, such as "crapularity". Things always disappoint…

The coolest archive just went online: the Nokia Design Archive,* with 722 entries. I swear I'll check them one by one.

Why is #design criticism important? Because it's a counterbalance to design curation, which is an endless celebration of excellence. Criticism, instead, has the freedom and duty to focus on the average, the mediocre, the flawed, the marginal, the evil. There, where the best curators can only see squalor, the best critics are able to find meaning—and even beauty.

Such tragic news. I never had the chance to meet Nicolas Nova in person, but I followed his work for many years and was always amazed by the breadth of his interests. A huge, irreplaceable loss for the design field and many others. Let's read his books, study his work, cherish his intelligence.

My take for subwaytakes would be: STOP MAKING SLIDES. They are a waste of time, don't make a class or a presentation necessarily more interesting, and prevent the emergence of new ideas. Just talk, while optionally showing images and videos–the browser is the ultimate Powerpoint.

The first Millennial in history? Walter Benjamin:

"There was nothing to allay the violence with which it pierced me. Powerless, I suffered, seeing that it obliterated my consciousness of time, my firm resolve, my sense of duty. And just as the medium obeys the voice that takes possession of him from beyond the grave, I submitted to the first proposal that came my way through the telephone."

The latest issue of Other Worlds focuses on Kamala Harris’s campaign, and who better to write about it than Noemi Biasetton? Author of Superstorm: Design and Politics in the Age of Information and a recent guest on Scratching the Surface podcast, Biasetton examines Harris’s viral hype-based campaign, which aimed to engage young voters through meme culture and the “brat” aesthetic. She highlights the strategy’s adaptability and appeal but also warns of potential backlash from forced trends and unconvincing attempts to sway a savvy online audience.

I was glad to be invited by Baltan Laboratories to contribute to their Raise Your Voice zine on education, as it gave me the perfect opportunity to voice something I've wanted to say for a long time: design schools (and schools in general) must be leisurely environments. Otherwise, they're factories. If a timer is needed during teaching hours, something is fundamentally wrong with your institution.

The zine is already out and will be soon distributed, but you can already read my contribution here: https://silviolorusso.com/publication/a-school-knows-no-stopwatch/
