Much thanks to @shadsy for the shout-out on the most recent episode of Video Game History Hour rounding up the Save the Games symposium at the Strong back in August! Listening back and thinking about what a highlight that event was for the year, so grateful to Andrew Borman and the whole team in Rochester for gathering that incredible group and being such superlative hosts.

The film preservation-to-digital/games pipeline is real and I definitely have THOUGHTS 😄

Can't recommend Seeking Mavis Beacon highly enough - both a fascinating bit of tech history investigation (truly, some wild turns; wait for the Robert Blake connection that you did not see coming) but more deeply an affecting and twisty look at cyber-identity and the tension for black, queer, marginalized folks between virtual worlds as a site for liberation or just another route for the same old patterns of exploitation. Rentable now and well worth a few bucks.

(on a bit of a downer note, in breezing back through this blog to check for glaring image/formatting fixes, I was reminded how I absolutely did some of the best, most useful tech writing of my life in the ~4 months around summer 2018 when I was otherwise unemployed. makes ya think!)

The Copyright Officer's response in denying our requested expanded 1201 DMCA exemption for non-game software is giving me flashbacks about a former boss (a very long time ago, this is not a subtoot) who would constantly ask for more details in proposals I was making to justify the use case, then wouldn't read said details because they were too technical

(were I on the Grav team, I might suggest that fleshing out https://learn.getgrav.org/17/migration beyond Drupal toot sweet might be uh advantageous)

Any recent documentation on steps and/or tips for migrating from WordPress to Grav? A lot of the blogs and tooling I'm seeing are quite old, and while if all else fails I'm sure I can work out a manual migration to Markdown, I'd love something that really gets into some of the nitty gritty like preserving comments, forms, etc

crowdsource: what are the best/better corporate histories of Apple? (NOT Steve Jobs)

ones that don't read like hagiography? and maybe cover the '80s and '90s in particular?

hey @misty, I got a note from someone that they've been trying to sign up for an account here but it doesn't seem like the confirmation emails are sending. they tried emailing admin at digipres.club too but we're not sure if those are going through either, if maybe something got misconfigured in the migration?

have any new registration requests come through since the migration, @joshuatj @dsalo? or is this a one-off issue? (can DM y'all her info if it's helpful)

side note: is there any way to check previous #iPres conference award winners? (not DPC or NDSA winners - i mean best paper, best poster, etc.)

looking directly at previous conference websites isn't turning up much

since I didn't have my phone (lol), one of the things I did to entertain myself on the flight back to the states was to make a list of all the folks I met for the first time at my first in-person iPres - a great number of whom were already "friends" from here on digipres.club or from ye olde digipres twittter. y'all are special and I'm not going to lie, it's been a brutal ~4.5 years only seeing y'all in Zoom windows

I love the idea of looking to the right to repair movement for modeling and inspiration for what we can do with improvements to the copyright/intellectual property paradigm at large. Hardly like that's a solved issue, but successful wedge issues have made room for some leverage
