when we were kids my youngest sister had one of those "hang in there kitty" posters. i went to look for it on https://www.google.com/search?q=hang+in+there+kitty and now i am finally asking the right questions: what kind of sadistic photographer is hanging kitties on all neighborhood strings and branches until they get the right shot?!

things that should be obvious in hindsight: given that cost of GC is a sum of different phases and that each phase cost should depend on heap size (live data size ideally), if you run a phase that depends even indirectly on the whole heap size during minor GC (instead of nursery size), you will have a bad time. (whippet's ephemeron working-set data structure depended on whole-heap size)

workers are here today insulating under the old roof, which basically involves lacing up flexible 12cm-thick wood fiber panels between the rafters before adding battens underneath and an additional 20cm layer. but before that they were taking off the existing attic-floor insulation, which was... sheep's wool 🤪 rolls of it, 5cm thick or so. funny stuff
