https://youtu.be/AuA_NiP5r-Q is an excellent, well-argued video about whether Polish should adopt the cyrillic writing system or not. It's not quite as clear-cut as it might seem.

If you're worried that a deranged old man is ruining your country, part of the problem is that a position with sufficient power exists where a deranged old man in the right spot can ruin it.

Some German asked something in the Copenhagen subreddit using Google Translate instead of just writing in English and now everyone is making fun of them (and 90% of answers are in English).

This is probably the most english-speaking city that's not in an english-speaking country I can imagine.

Vcaml is a pretty interesting library to write Neovim plugins in OCaml. It works by running an external process and communicates via MessagePack but Neovim has fairly neat built-in support for launching and managing such subprocesses.

Monday I mentioned I got an answer from Munich authorities at 6:22 (AM).

I reported someone parking in a no parking zone in Copenhagen at midnight, got an answer at 4:35 (AM).

I got a new bike stand and it is nice but then I spent half an hour fixing the wrong wheel and only realized my mistake when the ordered brake pads didn't fit.

Really hope that the new pads survive more than a year before they get contaminated again. Putting hydraulic oil right next to easily contaminated brake pads and rotors doesn't seem like the best brake design.

I've requested my voting papers for the German election via e-mail (it's a bit tricky because it's handled by every municipality differently) but the next day, Monday at 6:21 (AM) I got a confirmation that the Munich authorities forwarded that to the right place.

Good on you Munich, I am impressed.

Grocery chains and the Danish Consumer Council want Danes to eat more legumes and less meat

I feel Danish supermarkets should maybe then offer meat-free variants of their products because the choice is often just variants on chicken, pork, beef.

When I moved to Denmark many years ago the fact that you could pay everyone using MobilePay was a game changer. No need for cash if I can just pay to anyone's account immediately.

Now with free instant transfers within the Eurozone I feel that the need for an equivalent app in the EU is mostly gone. I just transferred from a German account to a Lithuanian one and that's something MobilePay can't match.

Got an ad for a cool new "quality ingredients", "small batch", "Made in Denmark", "No preservatives" chinese dumpling brand. I go on their website, they have 3 variants, of which zero vegetarian options.

Being vegetarian in this country is really depressing.

On one hand, people here love "sustainable" and sorting trash and it's all great but somehow we still generate the most trash in the EU, far outpacing e.g. Sweden, which I would say is culturally similar and even countries where sustainability is of next to no concern like Poland.

It's absolutely baffling how there's less car traffic in London (population 8.8 million) than in Copenhagen (population 660k, roughly 15x smaller).

It's almost as if not not having 4-6 lane roads going through the city is a good idea, actually. Funny how that is.

Three days in London until I saw police on a bike.

Two days in Ghent until I saw police on a bike.

Eight years in Copenhagen I haven't seen police on a bike. On horse, yes. Driving with a car in a pedestrian zone, yes, but never ever on a bike.

Weird that a lot of specialty coffee places in London are closed on Sunday.

Generally the city seems kind of dead on Sunday.

I dislike cheaply done, thoughless and ugly glass cubes just like anyone else and like neoclassicist buildings but this historic revisionism of the rich building neoclassicist buildings again doesn't sit well with me, this video puts it better into words than I can: https://youtu.be/BvOPsgodL9M

That said, the Danish alphabet is actually pretty reasonable: æ has an upper case, a place in the alphabet etc. Meanwhile ß in German is complicated and äüö aren't proper letters either.

I'm this close to adapting the classic kamelåså quote into "the Danish alphabet is very complicated"
