Apparently Meta is "accidentally" blocking links to Pixelfed, not unlike Musk suppressing Twitter/X links to Mastodon.

This is probably the mosts that Pixelfed has ever been in the public conciousness. It's nowhere close to being a threat to Instagram, and probably never will be. The fact that Meta was scared enough to do this anyway is gratifying.

And yet I wonder what they could have done recently that has them scared of people leaving?

(2010) 15 years ago today (oof) I drew the first comics of Katie and co. for a college magazine.

The EIC at the time was cool enough to let me make full page comics provided they not be "too self-contained". So I made a slice-of-life series that took place on campus.

Back then, Katie was more just eccentric and only kinda socially inept, rather than the outright gremlin she's become since. I'd call it character development, but that'd require personal growth.

• Just how much expression, effort and detail get lost going from sketch to line art

• CMYK does not translate all that well to 8-bit RGB

So I don't know if anyone else is running into this issue, but apparently running a Windows VM via libvirt specifically with the QXL video option is somehow causing the libvirt daemon to abruptly abort, at least on Fedora 41.

The VGA and Virtio video options don't seem to have this problem hence why I'm blaming QXL. I originally thought it was because the libvirt SystemD unit ships preconfigured with the "--timeout 120" argument, but apparently not.

I just realized I never uploaded this here. From 2020, a full 4K 3D remake of the Windows 3.0 CHESS.BMP wallpaper done entirely in Blender (except the floor which was Inkscape)

Controversial take:

If there's even a slight chance of convincing someone to try Mastodon, just have them sign up for mastodon(.)social. Keep that barrier to entry to the Fediverse as low as possible.

Then, let them discover what federation is naturally by pointing them to accounts to interact with that may come from other instances without explaining what that means upfront.

If they want to learn more, ease into the terminology based on how much they actually want to know.

I mentioned before that despite being happy that I left Twitter, I do feel cut off from what is still the Internet town square.

Many well-meaning online creators haven't left, major brands haven't left, update feeds for essential services haven't left.

Threads only appeals to Meta users, I don't know who Bluesky is for, and Mastodon is still too confusing and niche.

I fear that even if Twitter actually does shut down, people won't migrate and a large part of the web will just go dark.

Once again, there will never be a "year of the Linux desktop" until there is one pre-installed distro, one polished- opinionated- user-focused DE, one curated app store, and seamless vertical integration with the hardware.

Once again... again- the average person understandably sees their computer as an appliance since that's how computers were sold to them for the past few decades. The sum of all these parts must be as approachable as a MacBook at minimum, or you've already lost them.
