I got text-indentation working in the new parser. If a paragraph comes after a chapter heading, or a deliberate line break, the first line of the paragraph will not indent.

The latest version of my line-break function can handle 98% of the line breaks automatically. That's the good news. The bad news is that, for a longer work, there's still a lot of user input required. For example, on the novel McTeague (100K+ words, 11,360 lines), the program will still need help with 244 of those lines.

By 'help', I mean telling the program where it should hyphenate a word when breaking a line. Do I have some kind of syllabary library? No, not yet.

I write all of my blog posts in Shanty. It's a big ol' text file, and then I basically have a static-site generator script build out the blog posts from there.

If I had a way to make that a multi-user thing, maybe that could be an alternative to Substack...

There's always a danger in writing that you can lost in world-building, and never get around to actually telling a story. This blog post by Jessica Abel is a must-read on the subject. https://jessicaabel.com/idea-debt/ I like her phrase "binders of lore."

I have my own idea debt, although it is not for a fantasy series. I think the reason I haven't done anything with it is it's a subject that I've felt doesn't work so well in prose.

Nantucket E-Books make it easy to add alt text to images in your e-books. In Version 5, I will be going a step further. Along with :source, :alt will be a required attribute for images, meaning if it is not detected the parser will stop and return an error.

Attach a ZIP folder to your email? No, security risk! Attach a .js file? No, security risk!

Attach a .sh file or just rename the .js to .txt? You got it, man!

A few good things today:

I have never been more excited about the future of Nantucket E-Books. I will be releasing Version 5 in the spring.

and...

After missing an opportunity some years ago, I finally have a Patrick Nagel poster to hang on my wall.

Do you have a short story idea involving Mickey Mouse? Keep in mind, Mickey wearing gloves enters the public domain this year.

I will pay $50 for the best submission, and it will be a launch title for the all-new Version 5 of Nantucket E-Books coming out this year.

Requirements: it can't be horror, and you agree that it will be published under a free-culture license.

This web page about accessible EPUB files recommends embedding a sign-language video into the EPUB file.

I feel like I'm missing something here. What is the use-case for this? https://www.accessibletextbooksforall.org/stories/creating-accessible-epub

Every time I listed to this song, I feel like it's a whole movie playing in my mind.

For music while working, I have been very pleased with the YouTube channel Blue Turtle. It's fantasy-themed music, and they make their own simple animations to go on top of it. I would describe the art style as 'ligne claire', like the Tintin comics.

I suspect that if you played all the videos in order, there is some kind of story at work.

Why you should #pivotfromvideo back to text:

Text is easier to make. Text is easier to maintain. Text is at least an order of magnitude cheaper to host. When I screw up, I'd rather edit a text file than re-edit and re-upload a video, or have to add "PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION."

Text is more accessible. I'd rather prepare text and alt-text for images than transcribe a whole video or podcast (or drain a few more gallons of Earth's water for AI to do it).
