OK, I did the ironing. New Year’s resolution status: accomplished!

I was in the forest, photographing mushrooms and snooping around. I was off-trail, though there was a trail nearby.
Suddenly a large dog appeared, wondering if he could have some of my lunch.
A voice came from the trail calling the dog, who did not feel like going. The voice continued: Oswald, goddamn it! There is nothing in there! That is not where you will find your dinner!
Oh lady, I thought. You should listen to your dog sometime. He can smell meatballs at a distance, and he thinks mine are very good.

Are there any privacy websites that you recommend to your friends? I don’t need a site that overwhelms with 80 zillion categories, deep dives and tech talk. Don’t need one of those ‘new articles every day’ type sites, either.
What I want is a beginner-friendly site that explains why you might want to use this, that, and the other privacy-enabling thing. Like Signal, for instance. And social media services that are not the icky commercial ones. And a more private email service, etc.
Any suggestions? #privacy

The weather report offers all kinds of metrics: temperature, wind chill, that kind of thing. But what I would like is for it to tell me about the extent and depth of puddles in the forest. Do I need my gumboots today, or not?

Are any of you using Briar? Seems like it might be useful. I’m particularly interested in how it might help when there is no internet access.

Expect winds of 80 to 100km, says the weather forecast. Expect power outages.
We are prepared, with candles and chocolate. We are prepared, with a fireplace, fuel, and many books.
I hope the power will stay on, so we can cook the yummy thing for dinner. But if it doesn’t, oh well.

I like to meander along on side streets, because I discover such interesting things that way. I know where the mamoth rosemary bush grows, and whose old stone fence looks spiffy. I found the best egg stand, and a dahlia grower who sells bouquets in summer.
Today I discovered where the wheaten terrier puppy lives, and that might be the happiest find of all.

It's time for me to donate some money.
Which Canadian registered charities have accounts on Mastodon, or elsewhere on the fediverse?

I go into a restaurant and ask for a table. The hostess (whose name is, of course, Dakota) responds by asking me for my name and phone number. There is obviously no need for this; the restaurant must want it for their database of snoopiness.
I provide a difficult-to-spell first name, and a burner phone number. But you know, next time I think I’ll give them a number from a far-away country. Might as well give them something to wonder about.

I dared to crouch down, thinking that would be ok. It was not. He knocked me over. I was soon helpless, flat on my back. He stood over me, looking down, holding me down. Once he had me there, he licked my face while I laughed.
I had to be rescued. These golden retrievers are big and determined!

There is one garden stand with a sign that says ‘hey, if you don’t have cash, why don’t you just e-transfer the money to us?’
Another garden stand has a sign stating that one can pay by e-transfer, but it must either be immediate, OR one must leave one’s name, phone number, email address, and a promise to pay signed in blood.
You can probably guess which one I prefer.

What happy thing did you do today?
We went to the cliff above the ocean, where the sea and its creatures drift by. There were otters, seals, and sea lions there this afternoon.
I wave at passing seaplanes and tugboats. Do you? I like to think it might help make somebody smile.

The sleep-stealing thing happened last night, as it does now and again. So today’s activities were: dog walk, epic nap with dog, dog walk. Nothing on my to-do list got done, but walks and naps are important, so there.

In the forest, I wander off the trail and into the bush. If I’m close to a road, a thing I often notice is that a fallen tree is being chopped into sections, so that the wood can be carted away to be somebody’s firewood.
This happens in park land, on crown land, etc. Just everywhere. The other day I found an axe at one of these wood-chopping places; I guess the wood-chopper plans to come back.
I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, folks should stop stealing wood from trees that are not theirs. On the other hand, if they are destitute and need this wood to stay warm…

I’ve come across two shopping centres that use the term ‘commons’ in their name. That strikes me as so offensive.
Shopping centres are the very opposite of what the commons were: shared community spaces for growing food and raising animals. Shared.
Try getting together with your neighbours to use the shopping centre land for your common agricultural needs. Let me know how that goes.
‘Commons’ indeed.

I’ve had to go on a wee trip for stupid reasons, so I’m staying at a hotel tonight. Upon check-in, the staff guy informed me that they need my phone number “to keep on file.” Oh, do they now? Explain to me what they really want to do with my number; I don’t think it’s anything good.
I gave him my burner number, then burned the number. File that, O snoopy hotel chain.

Send the file, they say. The file contains personal details, so I turn it into a pdf and password protect it. I send the file, then phone to give them the password.
Oh, we can't accept your file, they say, we can only accept pdfs. Great, I tell them, it is a pdf. But it has a password, they say, and we aren't allowed to type in passwords. It is a security thing, and we take your security Very Seriously. You must send the file in an unprotected state. Because security. Because we take your privacy and security so seriously.
And this is a medical office. Shoot me.

In the early days of blogging, a content management thing called Movable Type appeared. It became the favourite tool of bloggers everywhere. It wasn’t free and open source, but it kinda felt free. Until it wasn’t, and the owners suddenly decided to charge all users for use of the software. Response was swift. Just about everybody switched to WordPress, and that was that.
Now it’s a lotta years later, and WordPress has made decisions that vex a lot of people. Kinda feels like a re-run to me. A lot of pissed-off WordPress users are suddenly looking for an alternative.
