So just over a week ago I found out that some friends had arranged a week long charity drive for Cancer Research UK. They thought if they were lucky they might raise somewhere close to £1000.

They finished yesterday having raised £10,368.88.

Betweeen everyone who helped out and who donated: thank you. You have no idea how much this means. And if you missed it and want to donate separately https://donate.cancerresearchuk.org/donate

I have seen one new feature in iOS 18.2 that looks super useful (the Mail inbox category organisation). Annoyingly it doesn’t seem to be on iPadOS 18.2 and for the life of me I cannot figure out why 🤨

So a bunch of my artist and animator and game dev friends seem to have secretly planned a charity drive. They’re raising money for Cancer Research UK, getting to £1000 already. 🤯

They’re streaming a lot on Twitch over the week so there’s will be plenty of time to donate.

I’m just here with my mind blown and super emotional at having such good friends 😭

Sounds morbid (I mean it is), but slowly, slowly, slowly I’m getting my death organised. So much stuff that needs to be planned, cleaned up, etc. it will all be sorted though.

The largest part is just getting my energy back so I can get all this stuff done, and that’s going to take a LOT of rest and relaxation. Can’t sort this all out without brain power 🤪

IMO people going “I don’t get why people are choosing Social Media Platform A over B?” are ALWAYS part of that reason

People, systems, and network effects are complex and messy. Perfection doesn’t exist, even for you

When it rains it pours. After being discharged from hospital on Thursday, just had a trip back to A&E for the afternoon/evening thanks to some other complications. At least I’m back home now

On the plus side, I’ve had my first time in an emergency ambulance (granted not needing flashing lights), so always looking at the positives of an experience

I’ve personally been through a lot, as many of you know. News about my cancer. Radiotherapy. Being stuck in hospital for weeks. Finally got out yesterday and that was an ordeal. Lots of medical visits today. Chemo starting next week. It’s a LOT.

So I cannot express how fucking deleriously gleeful this fucking “Onion buys InfoWars” story makes me. Pure joy! 11/10 outcome! Perfect timing! Absolute chef’s kiss! 🤣

Just had my last radiotherapy dose. If all goes well I’ll be discharged from hospital tomorrow. Then it’s a longish road to “recovery” over the next few weeks. But as long as I rest I should hopefully be up and walking and mobile again and able to function better for the rest of my life.

Huge thanks to the truly amazing people at the Rosemere Cancer Centre in Preston for all their skill in treating me https://rosemere.org.uk

So ultimately, the lesson to give from my venting is this: Systems can suck, can fail, can be corrupted.

People though. Barring a few exceptions, if you give them even the slightest chance, people are generally fucking amazing

And after so much bad news of late, that is a bloody reaffirming thing to have had reinforced 💜

And the greatest tragedy of it all: pretty much everyone knows it’s the system. The staff are amazing, doing all they can (and even more beyond).

Patients are being, well… patient. So many of us are trying to be happy, friendly, understanding even as the system fails.

I spoke to a guy yesterday who was super annoyed at so many delays being discharged. Let frustration out at the staff. Yet at the same time shouting with no hesitation that the staff should all be paid double

And this is a prime example of why so much of the healthcare system in the UK is in a clusterfuck. One man on one ward causing all this knock on inefficiency because we’ve seen social care being cut for decades such that they can’t easily find him a bed in a place that can actually treat him.

It harms patients

It harms staff

It costs way more money

It gets to me as well. I am generally not a violent person. I won’t go out there and just hit someone. But this guy is pushing even me.

I’m ill, I’m dying, I currently am unable to walk (though that’s slowly improving). But what is killing me is being unable stand up and defend these staff physically. They’re as restrained as they can be (too much IMO).

I have far fewer qualms and would be happy to throw my body at the guy to protect the staff, but I can’t because I’m far too ill. It hurts.

This boils over onto the other 20-odd patients on this ward. The immediate issue is our treatment gets delayed as so many staff are required to deal with just one patient.

Things are more likely to get missed, people more likely to stay ill longer. Beds stay full because of delays in care. This hurts those down the line because now Accute Units, ICUs, A&Es are piling up due to no ward beds

A story of one patient. A violent dementia patient. Stuck on a ward for weeks rather than being put in social care because there is none. You think it’s a tragedy for them.

The real tragedy is seeing how this is negatively effecting the health of others. Nurses and support staff are constantly getting assaulted by him. They are putting their health and lives on the line. Not just physical health, but their mental health through all the additional stress when they’re already way overworked

Got recommended the Simone Biles Netflix documentary by @cate. Currently partly through episode one and I’m super enjoying it. Making the waiting in hospital easier to deal with

Ultimately though, it seems my time is fixed. I mean, all our time is fixed but mine is rapidly diminished now. The lucky thing is having time and knowledge to start putting affairs in order and say goodbye to people.

So yeah… tell your loved ones how much you appreciate them. Ensure you have stuff planned for if the worst may happen.

Oh, and if you have even one little medical niggle: GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR. It could be nothing, or it could save your life.

On the plus side I do have some treatment options to try and make things better. I have radiotherapy planned this week to help relieve a lot of the neurological conditions caused by swelling in my spine.

My tests also show that I should respond well to a particular form of immunotherapy that should give me more time so I’ll be starting that after the radiotherapy. I’ll be fighting this as long as I can and hoping for a miracle.

Hey folks, so time for a health update. As some of you know I’ve been being treated for Oesphageal Cancer, treatment which was going pretty well, especially after surgery in July.

Unfortunately over the past weeks things seem to have gone downhill. The cancer has returned and spread to my brain and spine. My doctors have said it’s terminal and I have on average 3-6 months to live. Not the best news to be getting…
