This short essay by @jono.id@bsky.brid.gy that appeared in the SISTRIX NewsWatch newsletter captures a significant part of how Google's Systems function regarding how it decides what to return in its search results.
I like the label he gave it: citation economy.
"It rewards content that earns citations in the form of links, mentions, and user engagement."
The concept isn't new, but it's not well understood. Jono states it more concisely than I've seen before.

I pick an instance like hci.social, browse its live feed, engage with posts, and follow people that interest me.
