I pick an instance like hci.social, browse its live feed, engage with posts, and follow people that interest me.

I heard today that a major Trump supporter who works for the government remotely, and just finished renovating their home so they could have their dream office was told today that they must come into the office every day of the week or lose their job.

One more example of how we (the US) are destroying ourselves with greed, feckless leaders, and unchecked/unregulated capitalism.

"Somewhere between 60 and 80% of high school students reported having gambled in the last year, the National Council on Problem Gambling reported in 2023."

Part of what drives this is TV and news publishers' incentive to avoid discussing this homemade and avoidable tragedy, as they have so much to gain from betting industry ads.

This is an interesting read. Although I doubt the writer's explanation is the definitive and primary factor for our current state, as complex systems are complex, the writer makes many salient points that align with my observations.

Like most things, our technologies can be used for benefit or peril. Right now, peril appears to be winning.

Using Mastodon is like gardening.

You tend to it almost daily. Some days, more than others.

You occasionally prune, but more often than not, you plant something new and interesting to see what will take root.

It grows over time and eventually it’s full of a wide variety of plants that make the entire endeavor feel worth the time you put into it.

That’s how I feel about Mastodon today.

My main issue with OpenVibe is that it doesn’t solve for the #Fediverse. Instead, it’s like texts.com (something Automattic also invested in – well, actually acquired), which creates a single interface for disparate messaging services. That’s not what I want. I don’t want multiple social media accounts. I want a single account on one platform that can communicate with all other platforms. OpenVibe doesn’t solve for that. ActivityPub with non-ActivityPub platforms like Nos bridging to it does.
