My sibling and I are still working through the process, among which is organizing a memorial gathering. Let me know if you'd like to be informed when we have a date and venue settled.

Back in 2018, my partner and I took mom on a trip to Portmeirion, Wales. Her dementia was a significant inconvenience, but there was enough of her left that she still had her sense of humor, and could appreciate the sights, including Harlech Castle just a few miles south.

Mom, an avid musician, was also delighted with the Penkhull Village Brass band, who were performing in Portmeirion during our visit.

My mother passed away peacefully Tuesday morning after a brief illness. Dementia had been slowly claiming her bit by bit for several years, but she never seemed to lose her energy and pleasant demeanor.

On Sunday night, after a call from the facility, a voice in my head told me I should go and visit, despite the inconvenience. I'm glad I listened, and got to sit with her one last time.

May the Universe reward her with happiness and peace.

The reason I know about these guys at all is because I just received a cold-email from a recruiter for this company.

I responded as follows:

There may come a day when I will need to seek new employment, even among companies with very peculiar names, made even moreso by thair area of focus.

But it is not this day.

Nevertheless, thank you very kindly for your interest.

...I've read Tolkein.

What an unbelievably terrible name for any company.

Already boosted in my timeline, but I wanted to add that I'm impressed this guy gave it far more than a fair shot, using it for over a year.

IMHO, LLMs are a parlor trick. The fact that they keep chundering up obviously wrong answers (chewing massive power doing so) makes them absolutely inappropriate for any real-world use. If I ran Google (and I should), I'd be telling the team, "Fascinating demo, but we can't possibly offer this as a paid-for service."

Fry's is gone, but Central Computers lives on in the Bay Area. I visited yesterday looking for USB sticks, when I noted they have gone in big on Keychron custom mechanical keyboards.

On display was a keyboard with clear keycaps and, I later learned, about two dozen different keyswitches, so you could test the feel of them. So I did...

I am embarrassed to confess I barely noticed a difference between any of them.

But damn, they all felt really nice. Beats Cherry Brown hoillow.

Cut the cord today.

So long, #Comcast, #Xfinity, or whatever the hell you're calling yourselves this week. Don't let the RST packet hit your ass on the way out.

And if you're in the SF Bay area, and you'd like your ISP to not be Comcast, go have a look at Sonic ( https://sonic.com/ ). If they offer native service in your area (not resold AT&T), they're wonderful.

I was today years old when I first heard about the #embed preprocessor keyword, which is evidently now part of C23.

Good ${GOD}, why did something so simple take so long? I would have loved to have had this 40 years ago!!

Not even holding the username serves as (admittedly thin) justification any longer.

If you continue to maintain an account there, you are complicit. "But, but..." Yeah, I know. We'll all have to start over. Yeah, it will be hard. Yeah, it sucks. None of them are reasons to keep your membership at the Nazi Pig Clubhouse. The old Twitter is never coming back.

Delete your X account now.

(It turns out I hadn't logged in in over two years.)

"But ewhac! You have an account on Xwitter!" I do. I haven't logged in in well over a year, and I'm not going to. The only reason I haven't deleted it entirely is to reserve the username.

I originally posted this as a comment buried in another thread, but it bears surfacing and repeating, over and over, until it sinks in:

Whatever it may have been before, Twitter is now dead -- murdered by Elon Musk. The shambling lich currently wearing its skin -- X -- is a literal Nazi cesspit, and no good can come to anyone continuing to associate there.
