Hey remember when you watched Star Trek and you were all like "oh shit I wish I had computer" and then you're pretend you did in your room?

We can already do that one. That one's solved now. It took less than 40 years since TNG.

But it's the one Star Trek and OpenAI don't show you that matters: making AI detect breast cancer before it's a problem. Making AI flag bias in tax policies. Making AI figure out freak weather.

That's the AI we need. Whether we deserve it is another matter entirely.

How do I set an env var in MacOS? Not "in bash", in MacOS. So that every application has access to this var.

Surely Windows can't be doing this infinitely easier than MacOS?

Starting to think the only way to get a no-fuss, wysiwyg-or-code-view "GFM" markdown editor is to make my own. Why is this still not a solved problem =_=

Hell, why has @GitHub not even bothered to make one?

The worst feature in #Rust is its insistence that it uses semver when it doesn't.

Stop pretending you're not a v1 already. You're like... v4 at this point.

Part of semver is understanding that unless you're telling people to not use your thing for anything serious, you're not at v0 anymore. The moment people use it and you want them to do so, you're at v1.

"But we might change the API" yes! That's what semver is for! That's the whole point! You get three semantic numbers, use them!

Where does #Firefox store its "activity-stream.css" so I can edit the new tab shortcuts back to something that looks normal, instead of the bizarro "we added an entire row's height of whitespace between each row" CSS that just landed in nightly?

our eggs are expensive!

Are... are you sure that's what you want to focus on?

Eggs!

Would you like a list of executive orders that just got signed?

EGGS COST MORE!

...yeah okay maybe you deserve this.

I still think Crockford did the #JavaScript world the biggest disfavour by going "comments don't belong in JSON".

Like, do comments belong in any data interchange format? No, of course not.

And is JSON a data interchange format? Sure.

But is JSON only a data transport format? Just like literally every text based data interchange format : No, of course not. This was already obvious from day one.

And so the only option is to add not-trivially-ignored data into JSON to get that text in.

Another PSA: twitter isn't a thing. Stop pretending "X" is twitter, and call it by the garbage name it has, because it's not twitter, it hasn't been twitter for years, and it'll never be twitter again.

Twitter is a digital, historical artifact. It doesn't exist anymore. Get over it and stop living in the past: the present needs you.

More than ever.

Look, organic chicken is $23 for a tiny, anaemic chicken. Duck is $30 for four times as much meat. I don't care if you think duck is "posh", it's a goddamn duck, it's about as common as chicken, and it's way cheaper per serving. Stop buying so much damn chicken?

I should also point out that "a browser" and "the render engine" are completely different things, and you could even make a great browser on top of chromium. It's just not going to make you, or anyone, money.

Remember Linux? Imagine if someone had gone "well the only way for this to make money is to run ads and have it sell your data by just randomly sending it off to data brokers".

(And yeah, that's literally what Windows does these days, I hope you remembered to gpedit)

It'd be cool if browsers didn't come with all this "to prevent finger printing we've made it impossible to do things with precision" bullshit. Here's an idea: instead, you make adblocking, script blocking, and third party domain blocking just part of "this is what a browser is supposed to let you control out of the box".

It's almost like someone should make a new browser based on you owning your browsing experience, not funded or owned by people who benefit from sabotaging your experience.
