Suomen poliisi ei aina turvaa mielenosoituksia riittävästi

https://www.amnesty.fi/suomen-poliisi-ei-aina-turvaa-mielenosoituksia-riittavasti-poliisin-toiminta-itsenaisyyspaivana-osoittaa-useita-ongelmia/

Poliisi turvasi valtaosaa Amnestyn vuonna 2024 tarkkailemista mielenosoituksista asianmukaisesti. Poliisin toiminnassa on kuitenkin myös epäkohtia. Poliisi muun muassa käyttää ajoittain suhteettomasti voimaa ja hajottaa mielenosoituksia tarpeettomasti. Poliisi ei myöskään aina turvaa toimittajien työtä. Poliisi on myös asettanut mielenosoitusten järjestäjille heille kuulumattomia velvoitteita, ja eri poliisilaitosten käytännöissä on eroavaisuuksia. Itsenäisyyspäivänä Helsingissä nähtiin esimerkkejä useista epäkohdista.

Bought a few stone pine cones at Christmas time. One of them just popped open, and I was right near it on the sofa. Heard a very distinctive little pop sound, so cute <3

Now, time to see if I can get a few little pinja trees (Finnish name) growing at home.

Blade Runner 2019, vol 1 (2020)

I discovered there is a whole set of Blade Runner comics sometime last year, and read through "Blade Runner Origins". Even though published later than the comics before, in the timeline they sit 10 years before. I found them a bit mediocre in story line to be honest, which is why it was nice to see this one a much more interesting read.

The protagonist is Aahna Ashina, a hard as nails blade runner who does not hide her enjoyment about her job of taking care of the "skinjobs". As the story unfolds she is forced to see some new sides to the way things are.

Kaupunkipyöräilijän käsikirja [The urban biking handbook] (2011)

Author Charles Haine (translated to Finnish by Maija Kauhanen) goes through all kinds of things related to urban cycling. There is information about different types of bikes and how they suit urban cycling, explanations on what components a bike is made of, (very high level) sections on repairs, tips on building your own bike from parts, a section on bikepacking (is that actually urban?) and a long section on running your own bike club. All in all lots of good information to whet your appetite, should one want to explore in more detail elsewhere.

Some of the text is rather opinionated, written very much in a "this is the truth" kind of way. Also, the section on customizing your bike had no mention of using stickers! Shocking, I know!

Reading journal updates. Got a tip on Fedi regarding OpenLibrary, and this actually fits my needs perfectly. The ability to mark books as read, give them a rating and update entries, or add new entries, without any extra social stuff or commercial elements. OpenLibrary describes it as a kind of Wikipedia for books. So, while reading I can help improve it by adding information and missing titles - yay!

For now I'll be trying this with my profile being at https://openlibrary.org/people/jaywinky . The only bad thing is the site is super slow. I guess the Internet Archive (the awesome organization whose project this is) is still not swimming in money. A small donation done to do my share.

Btw, what is also great about OpenLibrary is that you can borrow e-books and for physical copies it has outbound links for library and purchasing options. The library options come from WorldCat and Library.Link for a few books I checked. The former showed Stockholm as the closest library, while I borrowed mine from the Helmet library system in Helsinki. Helmet-kirjasto, why don't we see the Finnish capital region library system in WorldCat? Library.Link didn't seem to work for me.

Thanks to @sam@social.coop for the OpenLibrary tip!

Belzebubs (2019)

I've read these strips on the web for years but never yet got the actual printed copy. JP Ahonen takes us on a hilarious journey through love, family life, relationships and death metal. I love how the book collects a bunch of different character stories together in strip format, advancing them slowly through the book.

New work laptop to replace old faulty one - the Framework 13 🤩 Haven't got much past installation yet, but build quality and keyboard feels very nice + the orange bezel is so pretty. I got the DIY edition which was super easy to assemple, even for a person with a bad case of esssential tremors. All the clear labeling of components inside for repairability was really nice to see.

Scrolling through the "Install Ubuntu" guide on their page I noticed a somewhat weird statement.

Create a username, a computer name (anything will do)

Anything will do for a computer name? Sacrilige! Naming is the hardest thing when setting up a new computer! One must not disrespect a new machine with something random, some dull corporate silliness from the Winddows world like "jasons-framework13" (ugh) or a poorly thought out name that took less than a few hours to decide!

On a more serious level, @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org , have you considered mentioning on the guide that it's good standard practice to set up LVM + encryption for the disk? Currently it kind of recommends skipping that by not mentioning it. While it is something advanced, it doesn't make using Ubuntu any harder than without encryption - but it does protect the laptop user from data theft should they lose their machine.

Looking forward to lots of productive work hours with this cute thing.

I've been thinking of something new for 2025 and I thought I could finally start to keep a reading list. Kind of annoying I haven't done so before, but that is no reason not to start. I also like hearing about what others read and getting recommendations through those, so I'll be (initially at least, lets see) doing short posts with a few sentences of stuff I read through. Most of my reading is comics, with the occasional longer book. I'll spare you the details of every single magazine I read 😁 I hope this project will inspire me to spend less zombie browsing social media and more time flipping through pages of books. My actual reading journey I'll probably be keeping on a simple spreadsheet, unless someone has good recommendations for sites which allow noting down any obscure book I come across, with possibly a public profile to share?

You and a bike and a road (2024)

My first book for 2025. A truly cute comic book by Eleanor Davis, documenting her bicycle journey across southern US, from Arizona to Georgia. The drawing style is minimal yet gorgeous. Along the journey we meet all kinds of interesting people and see the ugly face of US immigration control.

This year has had so many fantastic and horrible things, I'm not going to start going through them (especially the horrible, meh humanity, you suck). But one thing that highlights this year for me was the amount of cycling I managed to do. Compared to 2023 with 3222km, this year I've got through 5705km, which is way more than I would have thought. One of my aims was to ride more than the year before during every month, which I accomplished, though somewhat only just for a few months. I also did my first proper longer length bikepacking trip, a total of 1500km in Germany, Switzerland and from there north to Amsterdam. Definitely wont be the last trip, though nothing major planned for the next year, yet. Apparently the kids want to travel too..

Throughout the year I increased my longest ride distance to 121km and did several climbs I thought I would not be able to do (1633m one ride total over the Vosges mountains, with a single one time climb section of ~800m or so). I also set several average speed records on some of my Helsinki routes, maxing out a 26.31km/h over 20 kilometers.

Overall I'm super happy about how things have been developing on this front and am looking forward to lots of enjoyable kilometers during 2025 🤩 To challenge myself a bit I signed up for the NGS Gravel Primavera Borgå 2025 race in May, for a 100km distance. I've never done anything like this before, hopefully should be fun. I'm just wondering how my dear extremely political sticker covered straight bar Sanna gravel will fit in 😁

Happy new year everyone, and lots of happy cycling kilometers in 2025!

Öljyjätit peruvat ilmastotavoitteitaan – uusiutuva energia saattoi olla niille muotijuttu, asiantuntija sanoo - Suomenkuvalehti

https://suomenkuvalehti.fi/ulkomaat/oljyjatit-peruvat-ilmastotavoitteitaan-uusiutuva-energia-saattoi-olla-niille-muotijuttu-asiantuntija-sanoo/
