Tbf this is only weird when you're thinking of lua as having arrays at all, which it doesn't. It's basically the same in python and doesn't look so weird.

a = {}
for i in range(-5, 5):
    a[i] = i
for i in range(-5, 5):
    print(a[i])

I'm sorry for imparting this cursed knowledge on you today. You already knew lua arrays start at 1 right? Well...

Downloads have been a little slower than expected (like 100Mbps) for a while, somehow my dumb brain assumed it must be the service uploads or something. Dumb me never did a speed test. I'm getting 1/10th my gigabit. What.

Risking angering some bees here...

If you're seeing memes about Squadron 42 being "delayed" again to 2026 and are about to go keyboard warrior on someone else's exitement, at least watch the full first chapter - played live yesterday.

We can't separate SC/S42 from CIG's controversy, nor should we, but tons of good people have been working incredibly hard on this thing, so maybe just once give them a pat on the back, cause it looks incredible.

An Age Of Empires game just came out on mobile. The opening cutscene makes it abundantly clear it is not based on history and has just made up an empire with barbarians and such.

Instant uninstall. That's not Age Of Empires.

Hot take but Godot would be a lot better if it's first language wasn't a custom one...

I don't want to look at an image, I want someone to show me some art they made. I don't want to read some prose, I want someone to tell me a story they imagined. I don't want to hear some music, I want to listen to a song someone wrote.

I don't want to waste any of my limited energy just looking at meaningless slop - I actually want to feel what someone was trying to make me feel, to think the way they wanted me to think, to see something through their eyes.

Get your AI shit off my feed.

My Synology NAS is ridiculously slow compared to my homelab. It was a nice little box while I didn't have anything or frankly know any better.

Does anyone know if it's at all possible to pull the two disks set up in their SHR RAID system and put them in a regular Linux box? I'd rather not have to buy another two 4TB drives just to safely transfer over the ~2TB of data on it.

Everyone's obsession with mean FPS value across a whole benchmark is a pox on our industry. We need to start also talking about meaningful measures of the first and second derivatives

Yo gamedevs, how do you get past that hump of "huh ok I've made the proof of concept thing, I guess it's worth doing this for real"? It's like staring up at a mountain to me after finally reaching the top of a mole hill.

Anyone know an artist who'd do a tiny bit of paid profile pic slash icon slash emoji work? Just need a couple and would rather pay someone than use an AI

I know this is preaching to the crowd here but seriously... Get off twitter. Delete that latent account. At this point simply doing anything more than viewing linked tweets is just helping the world's two biggest morons jerk each other off with money and weird propagandist hot takes designed to simply divide.

It is not a place of honour.

Nothing of value can be found there.

Leave.

Looks like I never did an #introduction post...

👋 I'm Marc, I studied VFX, then video game development, and then became a generalist software dev. I've worked on AAA Linux ports at Feral Interactive, Linux system tools (GameMode) briefly for Valve, Release tooling and CI/CD at Unity and now DevOps at Frontier.

Outside of that I create nerdy Linux gaming hype videos, write very sporadic articles, and advocate for fair ethical, political and open practices in tech publicly and internally.
