anyway, regardless of which version you choose, it is absolutely the perfect song to dance by yourself in a sweatervest with a hula hoop. highly recommend.

(I'm leaning towards less color saturation and pre-loudness-wars being the ideal for each, but that's vibes and not archival science or anything)

but take a look at the quandary:

the music video for "Godless" is available on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LduipA_XUJ8

it's great! that's it!

but it's also on the internet archive here: https://archive.org/details/The_Dandy_Warhols_Godless_

it's great! that's it!

but they are very different in terms of color saturation. which one is "right"?

given two copies of a track, where one is pre-loudness-wars and one is post-loudness-wars, which should you archive?

so, "Godless" by The Dandy Warhols is a great track, absolutely worth having in your collection.

it also has a great music video, absolutely worth having in your collection.

you'd think grabbing the video to add to your collection would be as easy as grabbing the song, and to a point you'd be correct.

three years for a shit feature absolutely no one asked for as opposed to any few minutes to review PRs opened for forever to add functionality people have been desperate to see added.

you hate to see it.

the Smithsonian was established using an endowment that was worth $500,000 in the late 1830s, which wikipedia's article on the subject says is "comparable" to about $220 million in 2007.

speaking of wikipedia, they also run on an endowment, which according to their own report[1] had a value of $144.3 million as of June 30 2024.

no conclusion I'm drawing here, just an interesting comparison.

good morning fediverse. :cofepats:

Pete Seeger led me to the Smithonian's Folkways collection, and now I've discovered that they not only have their massive collection of albums and recordings available for purchase, but they also have some playlists set up on various streaming services, like this one themed around the winter solstice: https://folkways.si.edu/playlist/winter-solstice

and in fact if you become a "Friend of Folkways" by making a donation (and living in USia, unfortunately) you can stream a good portion of their collection directly from their site rather than having to purchase the tracks/albums: https://folkways.si.edu/friends-of-folkways

Between 1948 and Asch's death, Folkways' tiny staff released 2,168 albums. Topics included traditional, ethnic, and contemporary music from around the world; poetry, spoken word, and instructional recordings in numerous languages; and documentary recordings of individuals, communities, current events, and natural sounds.

As a condition of the acquisition, the Smithsonian agreed that virtually all of the firm's 2,168 titles would remain "in print" forever

set up a laptop, give it its own fedi account, as in an account specifically tied to that laptop. set it up to boot to desktop and launch firefox with the account credentials saved to the browser's built-in password thing. home page set to the fedi client for the laptop's account.

hand it around. see where it leads and who posts from it and what roads it takes across the planet.

we might get some brief snow flurries over the next couple nights and it's just gonna make me want a nice healthy six inches everywhere and I'm betting we just don't get that this year.
