Yesterday I came home to no working home automation because the SSD of my home server died... again.
Fortunately this time I was prepared and had local backups on the hard drive array, so I just had to rename ZFS snapshots and redeploy to have it booting from there.
Is my NUC making those SSD have a hard time? Is the workload too much for WD Blue? It's a bit hot in there, but it should be fine, no?
Now I'm wondering if I should try again with another SSD, or change everything and move to a proper tower setup (and move my dedicated server home while at it)...

"This bag can be reused". For something that might come from the era where plastic bags were given away with a purchase, it sure was.

Is it weird to feel a bit emotional over the need to throw away the plastic bag that used to carry my "misc cables" for over 10 years due to it becoming too damaged to continue exercise its function?

I also found a open access database of DNS records. This might replace Rapid7 which revoked my access 2 years ago. Hopefully this should give more coverage of less popular websites. This might also provide a cleaner source for DNS records. I'm currently using random DNS resolvers on the internet to speed up the process but it means that leaves the list open to poisonning attacks, which might have caused the latest false positive, although I don't have enough logs to prove it.

I found a bug (optimisation that didn't account for DOS line endings in source...) that caused no new hosts to be actually added to the list for 2 years 😬. The list now doubled in size, and that's with the resolving process having sefaulted mid-way. Once I'll have a full run (it takes 36h to process) there will be more. Then I think I should be able to safely clean old matches from 2021.

Re: https://hostfiles.frogeye.fr/ , since a person on the internet has been nice to me, it motivated me to give some TLC to this project. Honestly, internet at its best. I didn't know people were still using the thing 😅.

Context: my hood is set to be only powered on when I'm close to it or it's running (it consumes electricity while idle and I don't like that). There's a special case that turns it off automatically if the stove had been running and is now stopped, so I don't have to turn off the hood manually.
Problem is, if I mistakenly turn off the stove it and turn it back again, the hood will stay off until the condition for it to turn on is triggered again. Don't have to actually run, I just do it because it's fun.
Solution is, make the special case a bit more normal, don't let it turn off if I'm next to it.

My home automation is great, I don't have many issues, but when I do the troubleshooting steps are cursed.
It's not: "did you try turning it off and on again?", but "did you try running away from the device and come back?".

Hot take: actually, Captcha do work. Yes, they can be trivially solved by AI or whatnot, sometimes even more easily than human. But the point is not to completely fend off robots completely anymore, it's to raise the cost of access to a website (or part thereof) to deter potential attackers.
I still despise them, or, rather, the fact that we live in a world that makes them needed in the first place.

Old I was using for Home Assistant was 700 LOC of pyscript (actually, still is at this point, since I didn't transfer every feature yet – like the lights). But also my policy when I wrote that was "we'll fix the edge cases and bugs later"... which ended up being never, so I'm fixing those as I go now.

Not sure if I'm doing normal home automation stuff, or just abstracting away the mess that is Home Assistant from a programming point of view... I'm at 1.6k LOC already, and I haven't dealt with the lights yet 😬.

It's now possible to have Invidious working again if the IP was blocked. BUT.
It requires running a script that runs Chrom(e/ium) to generate some personally identifying tokens. And for some videos, you need a deamon to decrypt them, which runs untrusted code straight from Google.
Hmmm, not sure I want to go through the trouble. I suppose that if enough people do so (and probably the AI scrappers which YouTube is probably trying to fight in the first place) they will restrict YouTube to logged-in users, and meh.
