Fabulous. As always. I've dug everything they've done. One day would love to see them live.

Speaking of #sleep...

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2025/feb/01/declutter-add-a-flat-sheet-and-turn-down-the-heat-hoteliers-reveal-how-to-get-the-best-nights-sleepat-home

' An overheated room can interrupt deep sleep cycles as the body wakes to regulate temperature, so Robbins advises a strict temperature range of 18C to 20C at turndown: “We call this the ‘thermal neutral zone’ within which a person is not likely to sweat if they are too hot or shiver if they are too cold.” '

Otherwise my new #elementaryOS machine has been working a-ok, but Renoise blurts out distorted garbage out of speakers.

Yeah yeah, Renoise installer warned me that you really want to prioritize performace in system settings and you really, really should install ALSA or Jack or whatever. It even repeated the warning on first run, and offered a link to #linuxaudio instructions.

But it was a lot of text and command-line shit, not enough spoons to handle it.

OTOH Renoise installed just fine.

Got an old laptop for free, so finally I was able to install #elementaryOS on something and see what’s it about.

First impressions: Yeah, yeah, this actually is #Linux for the rest of us. If you come from #Mac background, you immediately know where everything is.

Packed apps seem to be of good quality. Audio section on their App Store equivalent is quite impressive. But sometimes those are Flatpaks & take a lot of disk space.

There’s no screen saver by OS, you gotta install it on your own.

Vilkaista viimein rykäsin #HBO:n The #Penguin -minisarjan.

Varmaan paras #Batman-aiheinen elokuvitelma ikuna. Jos minulta kysytään. Mut ei tartte kysyy, nih.

[#]WordWeavers 1/26 ' Does your SC value academics? '

The diplomat is probably the only secondary character who even considers their value in any way. If he does, he’s calculating what their role could be in his various, overlapping power plays.

The value of academic education in general has been pulverized into dust by the chaos in the world, though. But I'd assume that – for example – any research applicable to the needs of the perpetual war machine would find funding.

[#]WordWeavers 1/25 ' When shopping, what does your MC look for? (prices, brands, ethical sourcing, quality?) '

The question assumes a working market economy around it.

It's a bit like in 80s Soviet Union: He shops for whatever he can find, and later exchanges that for something else with people. Ofc he has his trusted black market connection too. And bribing works, when he can afford it.

There's always plenty of booze and drugs available.

Home-grown vegetables are ethically sourced, I guess.

[#]WordWeavers 1/24 ' What about your antagonist? More traditional or more interested in change? '

She is actively changing things, she's fed up with all the injustice and horrors she's been through.

In a sense, she and the MC agree on many issues, if not most of them. Their methods to react just differ vastly.

Adaptation to the collapse never was an option for her, but he had the luxury to be able to do that – though adapting ruined his self-respect. Actually it ruined him completely.

[#]WordWeavers 1/23 ’ In their world, is your MC more traditional or more interested in change? ’

He’s a traditionalist, which means he wants a change. He didn’t think he could do much on that front, however. Everything has collapsed.

He’s not yearning for Traditional Values™ or anything like that, he just wants a functional society. The wars to end. And floods. And fires. And storms. And rampant warlords and pirates behind bars.

Suddenly it seems that he actually can make a small difference.

[#]WordWeavers 1/22 ' Does the thought of one day dying scare your characters? '

For them the more pressing thought is the possibility of death at any moment, so no, I don't think that this more philosophical variation of the question is very high on anyone's agenda.

[#]WordWeavers 1/21 ' How do your MCs feel about the ocean? '

Any mention of ocean triggers immediate traumatic flashbacks. The Netherlands dam system was destroyed during the war, and he was right in the middle of it all. He'd rather be as far away from ocean as possible, like on the Moon – which is exactly where we find him in the beginning of the story, somewhat ironically drowning himself in booze.

[#]WordWeavers 1/20 ’ Do you feel the Covid pandemic has affected your writing or stories? If so, how? '

Not directly, but possibly made my freeze worse. It had started already when pandemic came.

The enshittification of the world in general has had a bigger impact. Ukraine. Gaza. Climate crisis. Democracy crisis. Return of Trump. But pandemic too, ofc.

What's the point of doing anything art-wise anymore, is the question that I find myself facing more and more often. I have no answer.

[#]WordWeavers 1/19 ' How honest is your MC when honesty will get them into trouble? '

Originally: very honest. Currently: very flexible. Anything can be sacrificed for the next drink. When the mission starts, he'll need his newly learned flexibility. None of the players in the field are very honest, but he needs to seem honest to all of them.

[#]WordWeavers 1/17 ' Do you prefer long or short works? What's your sweet spot? '

So far short ones, I've hestitated to start a big project. They feel overwhelming. My sweet spot has been quite low, ~400 words. Small moments, one turn.

1/18 ' Have you ever wanted to write a story but lacked the skills for it? What skill would you need? '

I've wanted to write about my father but I lack the deep character development skills that it'd need. Maybe I should just jump into it and see what happens...

Haven't yet seen an episode of the second season of #Severance...

... but after re-watching the first one I gotta say that it nails down exactly the weird thing that I've always felt about so-called "work-life":

It's so separate from my actual life that somebody else could be living it.

That simple idea could've ended up being as some lackadaisical agenda-driven, preachy #tv show... but no.

They made this thing instead. This precious thing. This thing that rings the bells.

All of them.

So, do I have 200 € to throw for 6 packs of realistic drum sound samples…

... or should I throw myself into bed for 0 € instead.

Life is made of these kind of hard choices.

[#]WordWeavers 1/16 ' How long is your shortest work? '

Gotta be something @ https://ymt.fi – probably this:

https://ymt.fi/tm-on-runo-koska-tss-on-paljon-vlilyntej

Four words. 12 words with the title (which is longer than the actual text).

[#]WordWeavers 15. ' How long is your longest work? '

It's the current one. 42 pages and counting.

Probably wrote way more for our collaborative blog serial tho. No idea how much, unfortunately. Not super-easy to check.
