What are your biggest fears for the writing world in 2025?

Censorship. Censorship. Censorship.

I don't feel threatened by AI. Readers who want manufactuered literature will bounce off my shit anyway.

I am concerned the Christian right will put more pressure on retailers and payment processors to crack down on anything sex positive.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub January 16: How would you describe the way you create your stories to a non-writer?

I craft an adversary.

I channel my protagonist. Like a hallucination of a method actor.

I let the words out.

I edit, but less than they tell me to.

The harder I try, the less it works.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 15. Would you hide your politics to avoid alienating readers?

Buahahahahahahaha.

Oh, you're serious?

My writing is unappologetically provocative, confrontational, and defiant. I'm writing about politics made personal, although I never preach--I'm way more show than tell.

Hell, my inspiration for my debut novel was basically: right wingers keep saying queer anarchists are evil, what if one of us really made a deal with the devil?

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Day 13: What's your favourite trope? Do you lean into it for your work or shy away?

I don't know the tvtropes word for it, but "nerd rage" -- when a person who's been following the rules (instead of having fun) discovers they won't actually benefit, and consequently flips shit much much harder than anybody expects from the little goody two-shoes.

This is a neo-noir thriller where rage is power and the monster that goes bump in the night is a woman with nothing to lose.

With growing infernal powers, formidable wits, relentless will, and a custom machine gun, Jax will do whatever it takes to dismantle the engines of her misery and punish the men who profit from them.

Dr. Grey's world is our own, but in Idle Hands, Jones tells a story where pride and pleasure are celebrated. Violence is an answer. And resistance isn’t stoic or pretty—it’s loud, raw, and unapologetic.

Idle Hands

Book #1 of the Jackson Grey Situation

Dr. Jackson Grey is on the verge of a breakthrough in cancer treatment when corporate greed destroys everything. Her lab shuttered. Her research stolen. Her career and future erased by callous profiteers twisting her cure into a weapon. Broke, furious, and on the edge of oblivion, Jax makes a literal deal with the Devil.

Here we have @pluralistic doing a wisdom again.

https://pluralistic.net/2024/12/21/blockheads-r-us/#vocational-awe

Something I'll add:

Vocational awe also extends to many people who entered STEM with real interest. Spending your whole life pursuing one avenue of research means you'll have to work wherever they'll pay for that research.

This is a theme I explore in my upcoming novel, which focuses on systemic exploitation of high-knowledge workers and one scientist's enraged reaction to it.

A question for my fellow non-binary peeps using "they/them" pronouns:

If I'm talking about a single individual usng your pronouns, do you prefer "themself" or "themselves"?

Examples:

Let them do it for themself.

They dressed themself.

Let them do it for themselves.

They dressed themselves.

Holy shit, I actually cannot find a stock image of a woman with afro puffs. I can find plenty of magazine and blog images, but nothing I can license. Fair enough, but weird.
