@academicchatter wow, have submitted my biggest grant demand up to now, 1.2Mio€, this week, 36 minutes before the deadline. Happy 😁 but :battery_empty: I'm quite glad that this is done (with the help of many colleagues), and that I can pick up my scientific live where I left it a month ago :battery_ok: and am looking forward to a sunny week-end :battery_full:

Une très bonne question qu'il faut poser, car avec l'augmentation de la température, les cyclones vont devenir de plus en plus violents: "Quelle restauration des forêts de Mayotte, point chaud mondial de biodiversité, après le cyclone Chido ?"

The traceability of logs is an international challenge in the fight against illegal logging and trade. Martinetto et al 2025 just published a new method combining #DeepLearning with more traditional methods on cross sectional images from pines and oaks for #LogIdentification, with a very high recognition rate :

Wind is not only a hazard, resulting in windbreak. Wind also changes a tree's growth pattern and thereby enhances its mechanical stability. Including this into #ForestEcology models is essential for a comprehensive understanding of forest growth dynamics and for informed decision-making in #ForestManagement Dlouhá et al 2025

Helllo, I have a #MastodonHowTo Etiquette question : Sometimes I really like a post, and I boost it. But I also realize that in the post are some hashtags missing , which would give it a much larger impact, making it more easily found etc.
What is the polite thing to do ? Write a reply that only contains the missing hashtags ? Paraphrase the post in the reply and add the hashtags ? Or is adding new hashtags not the polite thing to do ? Anybody any thoughts ?
PS: did I use the correct hashtag ?

Nancy Université recruits a new professor in #ForestEcophysiology . Any applicant will need « La qualification » of the Conseil National des Universités. Research will be aimed at understanding how changes of temperate forests functioning by #ClimateChange influence their carbon sink capacity. Please find more information about the post and the research unit in which he will be based at https://silva.nancy.hub.inrae.fr/nos-offres/cdd-cdi/professeur.e-en-ecophysiologie-forestiere

Not only drought has an impact on how a tree continues to grow after the drought, also wet period causes acclimation, which then will be maladapted to future droughts. And at least for Pinus sylvestris this effect is still visible after seven years. The positive outlook might be that young pine seedlings growing now during rather dry times will be better prepared to future droughts more frequent due to #ClimateChange :

Taking the recent publication by @EU_ENV and @EUClimateAction on the #3BillionTrees pledge https://europa.eu/!PvrVGK
as an occasion to show some nice data : 3Bio trees could amount to an increase in 0.6% in forested area. Here a nice map how the forested area changed between 1990 and 2020 (from the State of Europe's Forests 2020 report; see at https://foresteurope.org ) : in many countries it increased by less than 0.25% per year in these 30 years, but in some by up to 1%.

Concerning productivity of US Forests : Hoagan et al. found that
"adverse effects of climate change appear to overwhelm any positive drivers in the water-limited forests of the western United States, whereas forest maturation and positive responses to age-independent drivers contribute to eastern US carbon sinks."
This highlights the vulnerability of the #Forests #CarbonSink to #ClimateChange
And what are the predictions for the Eastern #USA in terms of precipitations ?

" 2024 ist wahrscheinlich sogar das wärmste Jahr seit 120.000 Jahren, also seit der Eem-Warmzeit vor der letzten Eiszeit."
"Die Wähler sollten da nicht auf schöne Worte, sondern auf konkrete Pläne und Maßnahmen achten."
