My hat was a hit. I wore it tonight to the piano sing along and the first thing the regulars said was, "Love your hat!" The second thing was, "You made that, didn't you?"

My partner thinks it makes me look like Carly Simon from her No Secrets album cover. I don't think so but I'll take it. I showed my appreciation by singing Carly Simon.

Finished my third hat and finally got what I was aiming for. This hat has a tan and black handwoven leather kumihimo braid around the rim. The toggle and clasp hardware weighs it down so the braid doesn't shift even though it is not stitched on. This means it can be swapped out for another adornment to give it a different style. #DIY #Maker #LeatherCraft #Hat #HandMade #Millinery

I made a hat I'm happy with so I'm now weaving a leather kumihimo cord to adorn its brim. #maker #diy #leather

Finished my second hat (right). It would work well if I were a pilgrim or into steampunk. Next up will be a shorter crown and I'm going to try a curled brim. #hat #leather #diy #maker

Making another hat. This one I hope to wear. I couldn't find a name for what I want so I couldn't find a pattern and am just winging it: slightly higher crown than my cowboy hat, smaller brim curled at the sides and back. I hope to stitch it together during tonight's violent sportsball game because I don't like watching violent sportsball. #hat #leather #diy #maker

This is from the Leathercraft Library. I used to have a member subscription back in the day, when they updated the site regularly. I think they stopped when George Hurst (God rest his soul) died. Now you can get the patterns for free. It doesn't look like much but if you slog through, there are great patterns to be found. https://tandyleather.com/blogs/leathercraft-library #Maker #LeatherCraft #DIY #Patterns

If anyone is interested I found this free pattern for making leather hats. It was obviously created a while ago but the basics don't change: https://tandyleather.com/blogs/leathercraft-library/2662-leather-hat-pattern-pak #hats #Leather #Maker #DIY

My hat is beginning to look like ... a hat. I'm learning a lot and am excited to keep going and make other types of hats. #leather #diy #hat #maker #cowboy

@JamesK Couldn't they have just adjusted the "y" offset a few hundreds of an inch positive to correct the letters I ordered?

I feel extra guilty because unbeknownst to them, I am enrolled in a machining course and soon won't need them. I'll be able to make my own.

But I already know enough to wonder, why couldn't they just raise the type a mm higher to correct the misplacement? Why would they purge those files? Yes, they're large but they could keep them on an external drive, just in case. Are they designing these sets or just buying them preprogrammed? Are there any actual machinists there?

Boy does my stamp making company know how to make me feel guilty. Ordered two extra letters for a set I already owned & the letters didn't match placement of the other letters in the set. (They were aligned too low.) The company said they had purged the files for the old sets so they weren't sure how to make them align. To correct the matter, they sent me a whole new set. That's great customer service but whereas I spent $8 for the additional letters and the new set cost $230, I feel guilty.

We're pretty excited to add a new font to our arsenal of personalization stamps. These lettersets cost hundreds of dollars so it's quite an investment but the cyber Monday sale was so good we couldn't afford not to invest in another. The new one is the script in the center. #Leather #maker #stamps #Personalization

I had no idea Smith's was based on York Maine! There are gorgeous leather goods in their shop as well as their iconic leather balm. Met one of the owners, Shane, who is a very nice dude. Go check them them out when in York! #Smiths #leather #HandMade

This project's been in my mind for about 2 years & I've finally created the prototype. One keeps this by their door w/ a house key & a twenty dollar bill plus whatever other small vital stuff you need.

You've let Otis sit too long without a walk & need to dash out of the house for him to do his business. You grab this bag, stuff your phone inside & off you go. Otis does his business and you tear off the waste bag to collect it like the responsible person you are. #Leather #dog #maker #design

I asked my instructor, K, if I could make him something because I gave my other instructor a holster. (Instructor B asked if I make them because he needed one.) Fair is fair. K could not think of anything but says his wife likes horses. She has no horse so tack won't do. I doubt she would appreciate a leather carving.

Going off script, I assembled this bracelet and added horse themed charms. I hope this fits the bill. #maker #horse #bracelet #CostumeJewelry

Here's the prototype of a new bag design. It mostly worked. For a final version I would use a heavier duty zipper. It could be stitched with seams outside or inside but I prefer outside seams because it shows the hand sewing.

There's little new in bag design because bags have been created for centuries but I did design strap loop that snaps to one strap and loops around both to hold them together for over-the-shoulder carrying. #LeatherCraft #DIY #maker #HandMade #Handbag #design

We needed a back pack to hold all the materials for a course we are taking so we made one. It is quite spacious but doesn't have quite as much weight as many leather backpacks of its size, which was by design. The entire pack was made by hand with saddle stitching and copper rivets to last a long, long time. #LeatherCraft #Maker #DIY #leather #HandMade #HandStitched #sewing

In case anyone is interested, here is the finished moulded handbag. It can be worn on a belt as a belt bag. The straps can be removed to carry it as a clutch. the small strap can be fastened to either side to carry it as a wristlet. The longer strap can be fastened to both sides and adjusted to wear over the shoulder or cross body. We try, when possible to make our handbags suit multiple purposes, in this case five. #Leather #HandMade #Design #Maker #MouldedBag

2/2...and begin stretching your leather around the mold. Staple around the bottom. Work slowly, smoothing the leather around the mold so there are no creases. Use a bone folder or dowel to help you smooth it out. As you get your leather stretched and smoothed, continue to staple around the mould. Press the container over the mold to help smooth it into shape. When finished, allow to dry. When dry, remove the staples and trim off the edges with the staple holes. #LeatherCraft #Maker #DIY #reuse

Leather moulds for making bags and boxes are expensive to buy and time consuming to make. You can make your own by recycling a smooth plastic container. Pour cement into the container & allow to dry. When popped out of the container, this becomes your mould. Cut a piece of leather large enough to stretch around the mould, with a little extra space on the sides. Saturate this leather with water. It should be moist throughout but not dripping. Place your mould on a wood board ... 1/2
