We have added the following server rule:

"No bad-faith accounts. We suspend accounts that clearly have no intent to respect our community's purpose. Examples include accounts that post only generative-AI slop, and sockpuppet accounts."

As our community grows, we want to make sure that new accounts join Masto.NYC in order to actually engage with their New York neighbors, and not just cynically post exploitative content.

Questions about this or any other rule? Let us know!

Shout-out to the Masto.NYC users who are reporting spam they see on Mastodon—even when it's coming from other servers!

No matter where bad actors are posting from, Mastodon provides admin tools that let us delete posts or block accounts that break our server rules—including the one about spam. We're grateful for the help in keeping our corner of the fediverse clean!

Hi neighbors,

Changes in the national political landscape will never affect our commitment to providing free, local, non-commercial social media services to the brave and beautiful communities of #NYC.

We're privileged to live and work in the greatest city on earth, and it's in our mission to help New Yorkers stay connected and strong during times of uncertainty.

Thanks for being part of it. We’ll be right here. https://5BFP.org

Another month, another #spam flood. As usual, this is probably due to misconfigured or unmoderated fediverse servers, which automated scripts can turn into spam launch platforms.

If you get a weird message with a QR code that tags you and four strangers, please use your Mastodon client's "Report" feature to let your admins know.

In Masto.NYC's case, we'll block the offending server until they clean up their act. We'll also work with resources like @iftas to monitor the situation.

This weekend is your last chance to vote before Election Day, #NYC! If you can swing it, do your neighbors and poll workers the favor of voting on Saturday or Sunday, and lightening their load on the big day.

And if you can't vote this weekend, then please do make a plan to get in there on Tuesday!! 🗳️🦣 Find your poll site: https://findmypollsite.vote.nyc

Happy Monday, neighbors. Early voting is now available at poll sites all across #NYC!

We encourage you to find your assigned poll site and make a plan to cast your ballot at a day and time that works for you. To find your poll site and see a sample ballot, visit https://findmypollsite.vote.nyc!

Early voting isn't just convenient—it also spreads out the load on your poll-worker neighbors into something more manageable than a single Election Day rush. And it feels pretty good to get it done early, too!

Hi neighbors,

The ever-shifting social media landscape churns on, and the number of active Masto.NYC users changes along with it. We’ve had as many as 200 active users, but that number's fallen below 150 lately. We've set a goal to grow past 200 again, and keep it there!

We’d love to hear your ideas for getting the word out. What are some things we can do, or resources we should provide, to help grow our community?

And, you know: Tell your New York friends and family about Masto.NYC, too!

And, like every Mastodon server, it costs money to run Masto.NYC, and we are funded entirely by the generosity of our users. We will never run ads, sell your data, or do anything else fishy in order to make money.

If you love using Masto.NYC, please consider supporting our work by visiting https://masto.nyc/give. We especially welcome recurring donations of $5 or more, but all gifts are met with our sincere gratitude. Masto.NYC is run by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and donations are tax-deductible.

• We upgraded to Mastodon version 4.3! (And ran the beta for a while before that, for a bit of a sneak peek.) Learn more about its features: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/10/mastodon-4.3/

• We've been adding loads of new emoji specific to NYC! :mets: :mta: :nypl: Tap your client's emoji-picker button to see what's available, and let us know about more emoji suggestions!

• With help from @iftas we staunched another Fediverse spam-flood in record time.

Two more, suggested by locals:

:red_bulls: NY Red Bulls 🐂⚽️ h/t @superbowls

:bills: Buffalo Bills 🦬🏈 h/t @dfbills

I could have squinted about the latter because the Bills are more of an upstate team than an NYC one, but I am not of a mind to deny a local user their own account-namesake team logo. :warren_liberty:

Good morning neighbors,

A new spam wave taking advantage of unmoderated or abandoned Fediverse servers seems to be underway. This one has Japanese text boasting about the purported author's skills.

We have more resources today to combat this than we did the last time this happened in February, and we'll work today to lessen the load. In the meantime, please report all spam you receive to your server admin. It really does help us clean up posted spam, and tune our federation to stem the tide.

Rolling out a new Masto.NYC emoji, just in time for fall:

:nypl: The New York Public Library logo! Featuring the handsomely stoic #NYC kitty-cat mascot Patience (or maybe it's Fortitude). https://www.nypl.org/125/lions

Local posters can hit the books with emoji code nypl. #NYPL

We also opened up the server's community-funding page: https://masto.nyc/give

While we haven't had an organized fundraising effort yet, I'm pleased to say that we did collect enough donations to pay for the first month at our new digital home! We are so grateful for this generous welcome.

Masto.NYC is forever a non-commercial project, and continues to rely on community support to pay for its resource needs. If you love this server and can afford to chip in a donation, please do consider it!

Happy Labor Day, New York! August was a big month for Masto.NYC:

• We moved our server out of an East Village apartment, and into a Digital Ocean datacenter in Chelsea. This vastly and permanently improves Masto.NYC's stability!

• We transferred the server’s stewardship to a new nonprofit organization, Five Borough Fedi Project (5BFP), which we founded expressly to oversee and care for Masto.NYC in the long term.

Made a couple more emoji for the server:

:nyc_parks: The NYC Parks logo! https://www.nycgovparks.org

:warren_liberty: Excerpt of the Lady Liberty Mastodon drawn by MaryKate Carney, as seen on our about page. https://masto.nyc/about

What little icons of NYC-themed flair and pride would you like to see added to this server as emojis?
