Turns out if you don't say the thing you want to say, you have not said the thing you wanted to say, and then people are not going to know what you wanted to say, because you didn't say it. I recognize that this may be hard to believe, but don't worry! Together, we can communicate by, you know, actually... communicating....

If you are excited about a thing that is going to occur, and you would like somebody to accompany you to the thing, do not simply say, "I am excited about this imminently occurring thing!" Instead, I would like to suggest that you say, "Would you be able and willing to accompany me to this thing at [insert place and time]?" It gets your intended meaning across in a way that the former simply does not do.

If you can only see the content on Twitter, simply do not view the content. If you can only purchase the item from Amazon, simply do not purchase the item. If you can only donate to the Salvation Army, simply do not donate. There are some times when not giving money to billionaires who would much rather live under global fascism is impractical, but as much as possible, don't give in.

"Free" here seems to mean "restrictive, but in a way that people in positions of privilege and power don't really care about"

Even beyond the complete devaluation of people of color, women, religious minorities and LGBTQIA+ folk, rule number one when someone tells you they will Do Something is to figure out what the Thing is before you consent.

I'm finding it really hard to have any form of sympathy with the people who now (allegedly) regret voting for Trump because they didn't figure out what a tariff was until too late

Speaking from experience, having to build yourself back up from almost zero dollars and zero cents with only minimal support from friends or family is literally, actually traumatic, and I am not using "literally" hyperbolically here. I honestly sometimes wish there were an ethical way to force CEOs to be homeless, with access to only what they could panhandle in a day, for a couple of months.

It's like our dear oligarchs know inflation is bad, but instead of finding ways to decrease prices or raise wages so people can afford luxury again, their strategy is to just convince people to overspend until they die??

Has anybody else noticed the vast increase in ads lately that are "jokingly" (but actually seriously) suggesting that people spend their entire life savings and sometimes more on insert product here? Like, companies are not even pretending to care whether or not consumers can afford rent, food, clothing, medicine, etc, anymore.

I'm pretty sure Anna Seghers' experience as a German-Jewish refugee to Mexico via France during the Holocaust is pretty important to keep in mind when formulating an interpretation of her novel "Transit", which is about German Jews attempting to flee to Mexico via France during the Holocaust...

However, I do take issue with Barthes' claim that individual interpretation is the only thing that matters. I think that individual interpretation is incredibly important for litcrit, but, for instance, an individual interpreting Kafka's "The Trial" without any knowledge of Kafka's existence as a Jewish anarchist in turn of the century Austria-Hungary is going to be a disastrously incomplete, even pragmatically empty, interpretation.

(Thread) I don't really talk about this a lot online for fear of being Eaten by Academia, but "Death of the Author" as an essay is fundamentally flawed in some really obvious ways. To clarify, I'm not going to argue that literary interpretations should always use biographical information to determine meaning; the human brain is more complex than "what I see irl -------> what I write on piece of paper"
