💻 HomeLab Chanukah 💻

Ok not really, but every HomeLab hardware weekend feels like a wonderful gift! 🎁

Today I'll be setting up a new 25U rack, and then mostly recuperating. I'm also working on the FreeBSD port of this OSS KVM: https://www.crowdsupply.com/techxartisan/openterface-mini-kvm .. couple of Qt6 bugs with serial usb handling but otherwise can get video just fine. It arrived yesterday, so of course the first thing to do is de-pack the Debian package and start reviewing repo source. Love it.

Disregard the boxes and living room clutter in these photos, we're still unpacking from the move.

🎁 Happy New Juniper Switch Day 🎁

tl;dr it's a Juniper EX4300-MP, with 24x 1G + 24x 1/2.5/5/10G + 4x 40G for redundant stacking, and quite a hefty PoE stat.

the new homelab network needed a new switch. I've had my eyes on this specific sku for about two years now, so when a corporate decom hit the secondary market with twenty or so units I was ready with an offer 15% lower than asking. I'd love to have a few more than one, but having one at all is pretty great

💻 CDE for the Modern Era 💻

I've decided to return to my roots, in some respects. Unfortunately, the Sun Ultra 60 workstation is not (yet) sitting at my desk, but I can partially relive its day to day experience of the CDE desktop by using NsCDE.

It's clean, crisp, responsive, and fast. Maybe once I finish customizing its retro-ness there will be some time for screenshots.

Now, back to eBay to find a proper Ultra 60... 😊

Juniper neteng nerds, which 10GbE capable SKUs am I missing here?

• purpose: firewall + routing, $1K soft limit on secondary market

• requirements: hardware EOL ok if Junos not EOS

• SRX1500 is nice but not very fun, not much to mod

• ACX4000 is pretty great and totally silent (EOS 06/2029)

• SRX1600 looks great but not on eBay, likely N>$

• SSR1200 looks great but not on eBay, likely N>$

If I could have only one generally trivial wish, one which must benefit the entire world, but which isn't exactly a life or death concern, it would be...

To remove every Realtek device ever made and replace them with decent devices from Intel, Broadcom (I know, yes yes, still better than RT), Mellanox, etc

Minor heads up to the youth.. don't blame your OS or computer for being unstable or buggy if there's any RT device present in the system. Ditch that shite and move on with life.

81 seconds to compile a copy of GENERIC_KCSAN kernel on GhostBSD 24.10 (FreeBSD 14.1 base).

That's generally acceptable performance for an often silent Micro-ATX workstation (EPYC 4564P 16C/32T, 4.5GHz, 128/ECC, MB: H13SAE-MF). Potential improvements abound, sort of, given two requirements:

1. Low-dB acoustics, not "pitperf maxxing*"

2. Usage for mid-level Ai/ML on VMs for LLMs

What could be improved?

a) Upgrade GPU: 2x A4000 →Ada Gen

b) Upgrade NVMe: 2x M.2 PCIe Gen4 → Gen5

c) Swap 4x 32GB ECC → 4x 48GB ECC

d) Swap 4x DDR5-4800 → DDR5-5200

Cost/Benefit on those potential upgrades?

a) Cost = $$$, Benefit = ~10-25% vector perf

b) Cost = $, Benefit = ~1.5x I/O perf

c) Cost = $$, Benefit = 128GB → 192GB 🤤

d) Cost = $$$, Benefit = not a big deal

• PiT-Perf == Point In Time Performance
• Maxxing == Engaging in Applied Maximalism
