There's a scene in the 1997 movie "In & Out" where the main character played by Kevin Kline has been outed as gay, and after being fired for being gay despite being a well loved teacher, his Teacher of the Year award is stripped away by the school principal during the graduation ceremony. In a show of solidarity, everyone in the audience stands up and says "I'm gay", which completely invalidates the already irrelevant reason he was fired and subsequently humiliated. This moment always resonated with me.
So today, in defense of all LGBTQ+ folks everywhere, I am proud to stand up and say, "I'm gay". When the Nazis start coming for you I'll stand in their way. They'll have to deal with me to get to you, and I'm stubborn as shit.

A person should never, ever, EVER have to fear their own government. Period. If even one citizen fears their government, they are living in a fascist state. The government is supposed to exist for the benefit of society as well as each person under it. A government that targets its own citizens for simply existing is fascist. A government that seeks to make the act of simply living one's life and not harming others illegal, is fascist.
The United States of America is a fascist nation. That is no longer in question. If we don't act to stop it now, we will become the new Nazi world power that Putin's Russia only wishes it could be.
Musk's salute was a Nazi salute. Period. He knew what he was doing, and he was praised by white supremacists and neo-Nazis all over the world for doing it. He did this as a representative of the US government, in broad daylight, to the cheers of murderers, wannabe murderers, racists, and eugenicists. He did it because he knows there will be zero repercussions now that the US government is ran by Nazis in all three branches.
This is 1930s Germany all over again, we did not learn from our history, and our government has become the very thing it fought against 80 years ago.

I need to get an electric guitar. When I got back into playing last year, I bought an Ovation acoustic-electric because of the versatility. No need for an amp, take it camping, plug it in to record instead of a clumsy microphone setup, etc. But as nicely as it plays and sounds, it's severely limited when it comes to playing harder, heavier stuff, and its pickup also doesn't play nice with my AXE I/O for some reason.
First world problems, I know, but dammit I want to rock out from time to time, and maybe even record stuff!

I don't use TikTok, and the US ban on the platform doesn't affect me in any material way.
With that said, I'm of two minds about the ban. On the one hand, I don't like the idea that the government can just ban a social media platform, even though it's for a good reason (TikTok is malware and is used by the Chinese government to surveil, influence, and control information seen by Western populations as well as their own citizens, this is a fact). If the government can do it for a good reason, they can do it for a bad reason, and the precedent is a bit too ominous for my taste, especially considering the incoming Nazi leadership.
On the other hand, fuck TikTok. One less misinformation-filled brain-rotting proprietary social media platform is a good thing.

So I came home yesterday to my cable internet line lying on the ground in my driveway, detached from the pole but still attached to the house. I called Comcast to report and see how soon they could come out to fix it, they are saying today around 1pm EST. I was without internet all yesterday evening and this morning before coming to work, where, after logging into my account here it hit me I could have gone online on my phone yesterday and this morning.
Why do I even have a smartphone if I use it so little that I forgot I could sub it in for my PC?

[#]FreeBSD 14.2 is now running perfectly on my Geekom A7 (my daily driver workstation). This is literally the only operating system I've run on this hardware that can play a 4K Youtube video with zero dropped frames from start to finish. Void Linux couldn't, Windows 11 Pro (preinstalled OS on the device) couldn't. My mind continues to be blown.
Why was it a struggle? Because the FreeBSD driver for the RTL8125 2.5G Ethernet adapter in the device doesn't work, and there is no FreeBSD driver for the MediaTek 7922 Wi-Fi adapter it came with.
Solution? Swap the Wi-Fi adapter with a natively supported one, and after installation but before rebooting, enter the chroot and pkg install the RTL8125 alternate driver. Reboot, and bask in the glory of FreeBSD on a mini powerhouse PC!

I miss Zip drives. And BeOS. And Slot 1 motherboards. And random forums for every little niche subject. And IRC.
I really want to go back to 1999 for a while.

[#]Fedora #Kinoite is...weird? I get that it's meant to use Flatpak for installing apps but CLI apps have to be installed via #ostree and even something as simple as installing htop requires a reboot for it to work? I mean I know it's an atomic system but that feels like such a step backwards to me.
I'll keep playing with it as time permits but I think I prefer traditional Fedora and #KDE.

I have a workstation already set up with that mirror and noticed the issue for the first time on Sunday, then yesterday afternoon I couldn't complete an installation on a new(ish) laptop using the CDN mirror. Switching mirrors in both cases worked. Just curious if it's an issue with the CDN in general (i.e. all their clients) or specifically with OpenBSD as a client.

Has anyone else noticed random "503 Service Unavailable" errors when installing or upgrading packages in #OpenBSD the past few days, specifically on the cdn.openbsd.org mirror? I switched to the ftp.usa.openbsd.org mirror and the problems went away, so it's definitely something related to the CDN.

I'm going to make a commitment: For every big tech or entertainment subscription I drop in the coming months, I'm going to start a monthly donation of the same amount to (in no particular order) a FOSS project, an individual creator I find in the Fediverse, an LGBTQ+ help organization, and so on. I have several subs including Apple Music, Amazon Prime, and a few others that I will proudly drop in favor of sending my money where it is actually needed and helps the little people get by, instead of helping the corporate bottom line.
Yeah I know, I'll lose some first world conveniences. But it's fucking worth it. People matter, corporations can suck it.

Thank you everyone for the feedback, it has all been extremely helpful! Please feel free to share your experiences further.
I've decided I want to try GrapheneOS first, and if everything I need works I'll probably stick with it. If I have issues with it I'm going to switch to CalyxOS and try it for a while. If neither of them work out I'll probably fall back to LineageOS. I know for a fact I don't want the default Pixel ROM, been there done that and it felt like Google was slurping up every single thing I did with the phone and using it to bombard me with ads and targeted content.
Thanks again to all who contributed and all who continue to chime in!

In slightly more positive (or at least proactive) news, can anyone relay their experiences with either #GrapheneOS or #CalyxOS? I have decided (mostly but not completely unrelated to yesterday's results) to move away from all things #Apple for good. That means I'm getting rid of my iPhone and Macbook. I want to move to an Android phone that is completely de-Googled.
I'm going back to the #Pixel 8 Pro, if that makes a difference. Once I've got my carrier set up on the eSIM I will wipe it and install one of the two ROMs listed above. Any help in this area is greatly appreciated, as are boosts!
@thomholwerda, I believe you have a Pixel 8 Pro too right? Any suggestions or thoughts? Thanks!

I briefly thought about deleting my account and disappearing from the Internet for a while for my own mental health, but instead I've decided to stay and offer love and help to anyone who needs it as we are thrown into dangerous times once again.
Instead of wallowing in my despair, I'm going to fight. I'm going to stand up for those around me who can't stand up for themselves. I'm going to offer a shoulder or an ear to anyone who needs it.
If you need something and it's in my power to provide it, just ask. If I can't directly help you I will try to find someone who can. I'm dead serious: This is going to be a long and dangerous four years for anyone not seen as "acceptable" by the coming Nazi President and Congress and Supreme Court, and I will do whatever I can to fight for your safety and security.

I am seriously, not at all ironically, considering using this for daily stuff I use my iPhone for right now, like taking notes, calendar, password storage and retrieval, and similar tasks at work. I use about 10% of the apps on my iPhone as it is, all PDA type stuff along with texts and calls, and with the keyboard attachment and a SDIO Wi-Fi card, I could probably also do email with the Palm.
This is going to be FUN!

Incredible thrift store #retrocomputing find on my lunch break today! A fully functional Palm m125 (curiously in a box for a m105) complete with docking station, official Palm folding keyboard and software, a retail copy of ThinkOffice, and a belt case, all for US$10!
This is one of the few Palm models I didn’t own back in the day and I had to have it.
