We're hiring a software engineer in my team at the Wikimedia Foundation!
We work on wikitext support for Mediawiki & associated services for the Wikimedia projects, and it's a great team to be in :)
Oh, and it's a full remote (many countries) position.

Some #AlphabeticalZurich news:

I've played a bit of Reus 2 this week, and I quite like it! You play as three giants that can terraform planets, plop tribes and resources on it, and try to make the bestest planet you can build. As you plop more and more stuff, your civilizations advance and require more stuff of you.
There's a lot of meta unlocks (which definitely helps a/ making the early games less overwhelming b/ making the "one more planet" more enticing), and probably more stuff I haven't discovered yet (pretty sure I can be mean to my people and my people can be mean to me).
It's cute and, at least for the first few games, relaxing - essentially a small-scale civ builder with a bit of a puzzle aspect, and relatively short sessions.
There's a few things that would benefit for a bit of a clearer interface (first thing among which: I really would like to see my empty patches more clearly!), but it's also very pretty.

relatedly i should really put my CSS in an external file rather than in my HTML template which makes me regenerate my files every time I want to tweak the css
this is suboptimal
but then my CSS styles are ugly and badly named too, so i'd need to fix that for it to work

So apparently my limit to
"my personal project is growing out of the 'just plop a pile of hacks on top of a pile of dubious code' and I really need to refactor that shit"
is around ~600 lines of PHP in ~15 classes.

Pro-tip: the order of arguments in https://www.php.net/manual/en/function.imagecopyresized.php is DESTINATION, SOURCE and not the other way around.
Signed: someone who spent a SIGNIFICANT amount of time trying to debug WHY THE FUCK that resized image stayed black.

I've been playing with the idea of moving AlphabeticalZürich to a statically generated thing.
So I've been hacking stuff, and I'm at a point where I have imported all my content into a markdown file, and I'm re-generating HTML from that markdown. It helps that the vast majority of my AlphabeticalZürich posts use very little syntax, in the end.
It's super ugly (that thing is NOT a general-purpose markdown parser, I'm not even sure it's fully a my-purposes markdown parser yet, and please do not sneeze to hard at it), and my code structure is horrendous, but it does things.
Still need to generate an index, and to slap some kind of CSS of some kind on top of it... but it does stuff.

I just finished playing Botany Manor, a puzzle videogame where you grow plants as a botanist in 1890. It was cute, the puzzles were fun (although I preferred mid-game to end-game), not very hard but cozy and pleasant. Although you definitely want to yell at other botanists and society at large for their paternalistic (understatement) letters.

Firefox doing popups with "did you actually want to close that tab, if not here's how to re-open it" has strong Clippy vibes.

lol and if I re-do the test without ligatures and on light theme, I do end up on JetBrains mono 😁

Because having opinions about coding fonts is Important: coding font bracket challenge at https://www.codingfont.com/
Turns out, I have opinions (some of these make me whimper), hate ligatures, and apparently the shape of "r" is more important than I would have expected for me.
It feels like the presence of ligatures in the font should not be determinant, though - because they're there doesn't mean I have to use them. Buuuuut. (It's probably the reason why JetBrains Mono, which is the font I currently use in my IDE, and which I actually don't hate, got discarded early.)
I ended on Source Code Pro. Well, first try on Cousine, but then I hate the "r"'s :P First attempt at putting it on my IDE is a movement of recoil, but it may just be a matter of "aaaah, change!". That said, I should have done the test with my usual light theme and not their default dark theme, because it changes things too.

Today's #AlphabeticalZurich walk did not start well, because some drunk asshole yelled at me for wearing a mask on the S-Bahn (fuck that guy.).
But it was better than it started, with views over the lake and clear view of the Alps, visible from where I had today's streets planned :)
(And yes, I have a plan to revive AlphabeticalZurich posting :) )
