It's been a long while since I've felt I kept GNOME Software's APK plugin at the very end of my TODO-list. It means, right now the plugin works unreliably, and the once fast-and-simple experience in postmarketOS/alpine is not there anymore. One more GNOME development and socializing meetup in Hamburg with @camelCaseNick and @FineFindus ! Today was a really productive day. @FineFindus created a libadwaita MR for some API we also want in Papers, and merged a locatization MR in udisks-rs. And @camelCaseNick and Ihelped debugging the libadwaita code and got 5 MRs in Papers in! As always, send us a message if you come around!

Just applied to the STF fellowship in a project with #GNOME, #postmarketos and #alpinelinux. This was only possible after my dad and @craftyguy got me out of a terrible emotional deadlock earlier this week. Asking and accepting help is truly worth it.

It might have gone a bit under the radar given there has been a lot of #gnomefoundation related news these last weeks, but in the transition to gitlab's wiki, there's now a section with Board's policies: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Board/-/wikis/Policies#board-member-policies. We hope that helps with transparency and build more trust on directors' goals and duties. As a bonus, they should help new candidates next year understand what being a member is. Thanks @allanday for the great work on it!

Ok, so we have a budget for the #GNOME Foundation! It'll probably take a while (at least a month...) for us to be able to report on it. But at least the first part of the job (agreeing on what money to plan for, and how to spend it) is done, which is a partial success :)

Spent part of the evening going over accounting for the #GNOME Foundation after the first meeting of the Finance Committee of the year. I won't say it's exactly fun, but needs to be done, and I signed up for it voluntarily :D

News on our work probably won't come out before a month, since these things move slowly, but we made some progress!

Last Thursday we met again with @camelCaseNick and @FineFindus to chat, code and pizza! This time, we even got around to rewrite some C code in Rust and document some interfaces for #GNOME Disks, and close 3 issues in Papers!

The fact that a small, young distro like postmarketOS is trying to do this work seems a bit odd. I would have expected others with a lot more experience and leverage in the community to have jumped on updating it when they made the "/usr merge" compulsory. But since that didn't happen, we'll do our best.

The worst possible outcome is we spend some time, are unsuccessful getting enough traction to get the standard updated, and then we collectively agree the standard does not reflect reality and is dead. Let's hope we don't get there.

Ok, so the day has come. On the context of getting "/usr merge" on alpine, I am going to try update the FHS.

9 years after it was updated, big parts of it are out-of-sync with the current Linux distro conventions.

We (@postmarketOS) already pinged the @linuxfoundation about it in February, and their suggestion was to get somebody interested to do the work. So let's start that process now! Since the FHS mailing list seems defunc (I subscribed and sent an email in February that never got added to the archive), please send me an email at pabloyoyoista@postmarketos.org so we can get a list of people to start discussing the process

So thanks to @rmader@mastodon.social we managed to get the front camera in the Pixel 3a working with a libcamera/pipewire stack 🥳 Thanks to @flamingradian for the work on the whole port!

EDIT: The driver does not properly release the camera when closing the app, so it only works once per boot. It would be lovely if anybody with the skills would like to contribute to improve it!

There's been recently some confusion in #postmarketOS as GNOME Software is still on version 45. The main reason is that the simple plugin: https://github.com/Cogitri/gnome-software-plugin-apk we use for APK has not been updated to follow GNOME Software's library changes. If anybody is interested in helping with maintenance for that project, I can provide guidance and reviews, and we will all be very pleased!

Last Monday we once again met in Hamburg for a hacking session with @camelCaseNick and @FineFindus This time we didn't only chat, but also got work done! At least 3 commits udisks-rs, the underlying library that GNOME Disks use to interact with disks, one Papers MR merged, lots of discussion on another one, and some extra hacking. We are trying to make these meetups a bit more regular, so shot us a message if you are in the area!
