made chana daal, following a Punjabi style recipe

I was out of onions so I substitued it with chopped up daikon, which was fine

the technique of only cooking daal in the pressure cooker and frying vegetables and spice later in a separate pot enhances the flavor significantly, maybe ginger and garlic aromatics are exposed to oil and butter longer

Brendan (@rit) was an avid scifi reader. I used ask him what he's been reading when we worked together at Lightbend

this is so heartbreaking. Brendan and I shared our common appreciation for diner food

I probably saw him first in ny-scala meetups, and over time we started talking more when we bumped into each other in east coast Scala scene or online

as I'm fixing my crooked ollie in an empty park on my own, and realizing that my center of gravity needs to be slightly towards the nose side, i.e. center of the board so it doesn't randomly twist, my thought wonders to yewckytv, a Japanese youtube skateboarder who passed in a motorcycle accident. when I get stuck, a lot of the answer is already in this one video

made already-vegan chikuzen'ni more woke by putting in gochugaru (Korean chili flakes), which I think is actually period correct because 닭볶음탕 (dak-bokkeum-tang) reminds me of chikuzen'ni, and chikuzen ~ Fukuoka being across the sea from Korea, likely the two dishes are related

sbt-native-packager 1.11.0 is cross published to sbt 1.x and sbt 2.0.0-M3

this was a multi-months effort by me, João Ferreira, and others to get all the tests to work on under both sbt 1.x and 2.x, partly by fixing the issues or providing workarounds from the sbt side like the glob support

went back to 8 inch Indy Hollow today with a new deck: Real Ishod Wair 8 inch twin tail / symmetrical, while it's 1C/34F and the setup was glorious

just carrying the board around is lighter and popping the board comes easier. when I bend the back leg, I feel like I can feel the bushing on the back truck load up, and popping releases the energy. it keeps popping at an angle so I need more practice but 2h went by quick

starting new year with a rocket ollie

it's awkward to find a flatground spot when you're away, so I end up venturing to a state-sanctioned skatepark. today's spot was Arsenal Park in Watertown, MA, which has a small skatepark inside. the ground was a bit wet but the smoothness and the density of concrete was enjoyable

Normcore manual grinder is so convenient for on-the-go nerdy Ethiopian coffee

with the flow-control cap and the stainless steel filter I got as holiday gift makes the coffee more French press, capturing the earthy tone at the bottom of the cup

finished ‘This Is How You Lose the Time War’ (2019) by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, which I picked up two copies to read with my wife

contrary to my expectation from the title, Time War is on softer/fairy tale side of scifi. it's a novella, written as a series of letters between two agents of warring empires. who both happen to be she/her, and very capable, which is cool. but not quite kicking ass, like murderbot diaries. more personal. drove 5h to Massachusetts. two podcasts that I queued up to listen with my wife in the car:

  1. Ologies (https://www.alieward.com/ologies?offset=1517892078170) by alie ward. the host interviews scientists to dig into different ologies, e.g. volcanology. fun listen.

  1. Swindled (https://swindledpodcast.com/podcast/01-the-lucky-winner/) by 'a concerned citizen'. true-crime, but more white-collar and cons. less energetic, but still good
