anyone have any idea what happened here?

5.6k servers shutting down in a month is a lot, but it is not reflected in other stats. im not convinced yet that there were 5k servers out there being actively used by real people that could all shut down without people noticing it in other ways

@tchambers I am personally not interested in an argument that indieweb has not seen any harmful posts by members of Threads. My concern is with Meta itself, and I see their policy changes as a form of hate speech. I think the policy of Indieweb should take this into consideration, and not only look at specific accounts on Threads causing harm. The presence of Meta itself is what causing the harm, as it brings a bad company into this space.

@tchambers Hey Tim, can we get an official statement on what indieweb.social's policy is regarding federating with Threads moving forward?

I am not comfortable that the server is federating with Meta, considering what has happened this week. I think we should not federate with a server that actively promotes harm this way. Federation decisions should also be made on the grounds of the ethics of the other entity that we're federating with, and not only on grounds of specific post violations.

This writeup as well as the report are excellent, worth reading.

At the same time, I cannot shake that feeling that we're missing something here, and I really don't know what that something would be. There is just such a massive gap between the (excellent) recommendations and knowing that we just really dont fucking know how to even come close to getting there. Makes me feel that a fundamental part of how I view the world just might be...wrong?

I'm very mad about this, and I dont know how to deal with it. Christine has chosen not to post more specifics about the talk, so I want to respect that.

But it is a very bad sign of the state of the fediverse as it currently is right now. This place could be so much more, and we so strongly need better spaces right this second. But we're being held back so much by choices like this, and its maddening

A quick comparison between how people like Paul and Hailey can Post, versus how Eugen or the Lemmy devs post, as well as the active user numbers between these platforms make me just ever so slightly doubtful of this claim

the shutdown of omnivore also forced me to come to terms with the idea that software being opensource and selfhostable is not nearly enough, and matters surprisingly little

omnivore was both, and thats why i felt comfortable putting all my stuff in it for half a year. and look where it got us lol
