"When talking to someone in a cult, never attack the cult leader."

This past week I attended a virtual conference on protecting extremely vulnerable people (domestic violence, people being trafficked, people escaping cults, ...). One presenter in particular said something very relevant to dealing with fascist groups through the world:

"When talking to someone in a cult, never attack the cult leader."

They stop hearing you right then. Ask them less threatening questions, like "how does this policy work, I don't understand." That will work much better than (to use a specific example), "Trump is lying" or "Trump is an idiot".

BTW, the conference was ProtectCon, put on by Operation Safe Escape.

Some speakers did not want their content recorded, so I'm not attributing this to anyone right now out of respect. I'll come back if I learn it's okay and add an attribution.
