"When talking to someone in a cult, never attack the cult leader."
This past week I attended a virtual conference on protecting extremely vulnerable people (domestic violence, people being trafficked, people escaping cults, ...). One presenter in particular said something very relevant to dealing with fascist groups through the world:
"When talking to someone in a cult, never attack the cult leader."
They stop hearing you right then. Ask them less threatening questions, like "how does this policy work, I don't understand." That will work much better than (to use a specific example), "Trump is lying" or "Trump is an idiot".
BTW, the conference was ProtectCon, put on by Operation Safe Escape.
Some speakers did not want their content recorded, so I'm not attributing this to anyone right now out of respect. I'll come back if I learn it's okay and add an attribution.

Another update:
Recently was at a partial family gathering "as me", and things went smoothly.
And I started estradiol (50 micro gram/day patches) (but no T-blocker) last week!

BMI is a little bogus anyway, because muscle tissue weighs more than fat.
When my daughter was doing competitive gymnastics, her and her friends were at a fair where there was a "guess your weight booth". The guy made guesses for 3 girls: the first was way low, the second was a bit closer, and even by the third he hadn't corrected enough: they all got top notch prizes.
So I would bet you are reducing body fat, but not BMI.

It just shows that our country is not "Red" and "Blue" as we are inclined to think of it as -- every where is different shades of purple.
And while there are real, physical dangers from some people towards LGBTQ+ people, there is also a lot more acceptance than there has been in the past.
So don't close your eyes to danger, but also don't close your eyes to kindness.

In fact during the trip I got nice comments from several women, and the worst I experienced was some guys being uncomfortable with me in the elevator.
But yesterday, back here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was at a quilt show with only 3mm studs in my ears and a pair of flowwey purple and white pants. I apologized to a woman I almost backed into, and her reply was an accusatory "I thought you were a woman."

My wife and I drove from San Francisco area to Dallas, Texas area (and back) last month for her nephew's wedding. I want to first note that she carefully planned the trip by looking for cities with an public LGBTQ+ presence, and the nephew told her he didn't plan to let anyone mess with us.
And he kept up his end of the bargain: I was in a green jump suit with a gauzy tan shawl and earrings, and nobody batted an eye at the wedding.

@BillMcGuire Just saw your handle: You should see if you can make it a palindrome --- that's how she would like it. Or tie in some reference(s) to whales.

We need to figure out how to create a honey pot for them .... Then they can spend lots of time bad-mouthing people who aren't even really listening (or even existing ...).
