I am very proud of myself for not giving in to the intense urge to become a screeching reply guy on all those posts, just shrieking constantly about the terrifying state of Canadian politics and how scared I am of a conservative federal government in our very near future. I have typed and deleted so many raging replies. Good job, me.

I am seeing so many smug Canadian posts about the political situation in the states, so angry at Americans for their voting (or not voting) choices. Alberta made the same types of choices. PP, who is just as horrifyingly authoritarian, anti-trans, anti-woman, anti-migrant, anti-justice, is likely to be our next Prime Minister. We are just as bad. Just as viciously capitalist and white supremacist. I hope the anger at the states turns into better choices here.

My #reading goal for February is to focus on Black #trans writers. So my tbr for this month is: Cistem Failure by Marquis Bey, Black on Both Sides by C. Riley Snorton, Miss Major Speaks by Miss Major Griffin-Gracy and Toshio Meronek, The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi, and The Library Thief by Kuchenga Shenjé. A decent mix of fiction and academic. If anyone wants to read any of these with me, let me know and we can schedule a #FediBookClub chat! I think I’ll start with Cistem Failure.

This week’s vlog post is about how I choose the books I read. I use reading to shape my thoughts and feelings, to help me dissociate in useful ways, to keep me connected to possibility. The camera is really wobbly, sorry! I am enjoying this vlog project.

I mentioned Walidah Imarisha in this video, too. Her definition of visionary fiction has been really helpful for me. She writes about it here - https://exterminatingangel.com/what-is-visionary-fiction-an-interview-with-walidah-imarisha/

The Lord of Stariel has very strong Downton Abbey vibes, and I don’t love it. I think it’s because I want there to be some kind of analysis of the inequality in the social system, and there just isn’t. It feels like the author picked this time period (in an ‘alternate England’ setting) because it can be neutrally romantic and fancy. But it isn’t neutral, and I can’t not see it. I’m not hating the book, it’s fine, but I’m not loving it. #AmReading #bookstodon

I’m not super hopeful that there’s a good answer for this but… are there any health tracker devices that aren’t horrific on the #privacy front? I currently have a Fitbit. Tracking my sleep and heart rate variability had been the most effective way for me to anticipate and prevent catastrophic crashes, and relying on paper tracking or how I ‘feel’ is not a useful replacement. Are there ways to monitor this stuff in safer ways?

I thought of this because of the zine that I put together with a friend after the 2020 US election. We used the metaphor of mushrooms and the mycelial network, and created a little self-guided narrative practice for when things are hard. It's weird reading that zine now, because even though I love the practice we included, and the questions we shared and the ideas in the zine, it's just weird and sad to see how much worse things went than we had hoped. I just sent an email out to the #trans and non-binary narrative practitioner peer group that I facilitate, to see if we want to put together a little #zine for our communities, since things are so hard and scary right now, and I don't have a whole lot to offer, but I am pretty okay at making documents. We have our next peer group chat on Saturday, and I think it would probably feel pretty good to put something together. We have participants in Canada, the states, and Australia.

Someone on here recently was talking about #TheMagicians and how much better the show was than the books. I don’t watch a lot of tv anymore but that conversation has stuck with me and I think I’ll do a rewatch. (Also, The Atlas Six just came in for me at the library and it has really similar vibes in the first few hours. I am a sucker for queer, overpowered, pretentious young magicians in a dark academia setting, apparently.) #bookstodon #amreading (is there a hashtag for watching shows?)

I find it incredibly irritating that when my pain is flaring badly, it becomes so hard to sleep. Sleep would be a reprieve from the pain! Sleep would also maybe ease the pain flare! It should be easy to sleep when I’m flaring, because that would be the most likely thing to make it better. Like, body. Come on. Work with me here. I have slathered you in voltaren. I have taken every available med. I have drunk water. I have gently stretched. Please, for the love of fuck, let me sleep.

This week’s book vlog is about Rebekah Weatherspoon’s A Thorn in the Saddle, why I think it’s important to read romance novels by and about people outside my own experience, and an addendum because I used some careless language and thought it would be better to be transparent rather than edit it out. This one is long! We are aiming for ten minutes per video but I’m bad at being concise. Next week will be shorter! https://videos.tiffanysostar.com/w/u29V3LgzeUKttgMx7i92Kp #amreading #bookstodon #romancelandia #vlog #peertube

I need to read a book about a favourite piece of media for the Book Riot #ReadHarder challenge this year, and I'm having trouble figuring out what book to read. (I would also like this to be at least tangentially related to my research, for the sake of keeping my to-read list reasonable.) So! Does anyone have a recommendation for a book about #transgender or #nonbinary characters in media and pop culture? #ReadersOfMastodon #AmReading #bookstodon

My (co-authored with beloved collaborators and friends) paper, ‘Revisiting insider practices: Ethical considerations, practices, and hopes for doing community work and narrative research in and about our own communities’, is up! I’m really proud of this paper, and the ongoing work it describes. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/tqr/vol29/iss12/10/

An interaction from this morning:

Me - I was thinking it would be cool if the book covers popped up, since there’s a blank wall there

Joe - did you watch the edited video?

Me - not yet

And then Joe rubbed his hands together gleefully and cackled, because he has already done that.

This video was recorded on my fancy DJI Osmo Pocket 3, which Joe got me for my birthday, and hosted on my fancy PeerTube instance, which Joe set up for me. What a nerd he is (complimentary).

Joe and I are doing a little thing together, where I attempt to record a book review vlog every weekish, and Joe does a bunch of fancy editing to it (like adding the book covers, wow, we are fancy as heck). First video is up, reviewing Cat Sebastian's You Should Be So Lucky. #amreading #bookstodon #romancelandia #vlog https://videos.tiffanysostar.com/w/d4anergh3iW7qDmxX89iFN

I spent today listening to The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year by Ally Carter and building the Lego Botanical Garden set with one of my partners. We used to do this a couple times a year, always at a hotel. We won’t have a chance to go away for a while, so we spent the day at home. It sounds silly to not have done this before, but I loved the ‘go away and do Lego and listen to a book’ thing, and resisted changing the ritual. I’m glad we did, though. #amreading #romancelandia #bookstodon #lego

I DNF’d Lucy Parker’s Act Like It because I found so many of the characters just mean and unlikeable in the first few chapters, and that is often mentioned in reviews as the book Spoiler Alert is most like. That’s why I had been avoiding Spoiler Alert. But I was dissatisfied with Kristen Bailey’s Textbook Romance and wanted something low angst to follow it up. So far it’s good.

I’m listening to Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade. It’s my first book by Dade and 40% in, I’m enjoying it. I like how Marcus is doing his best but still making mistakes because of how his privilege is in the way of him understanding the effects of his actions. I like that April is confident and secure, so we can see the effects of fatphobia on her without that requiring her to feel a bunch of shame in response. And I’m loving the representation of fan culture. #amreading #romancelandia #bookstodon
