I've just wrapped up tomorrow's 'Digital Companion' to BLAG 06 (https://bl.ag/06), coming to email subscribers via https://bl.ag/join.

I started these with BLAG 02 as a way to share stuff that ended up on the 'cutting room floor'. I present the material in the order of the magazine itself so that it can be read on-screen alongside the print publication.

The film charts the creation of the 8,000 unique covers of Eye Magazine's 94th issue, and the various typographic and technological processes that went into this.

I've found these classic titles in the Library of Congress, and am wondering if a digital copy/scan of the Coast Manual of Lettering and Designs (1907) by Frederick Knopf & J.M. Mahaffey exists anywhere?

Can anyone surface a simple video that shows the process of machine-printing a gold foil onto paper using a hot metal die?

Or know if it's even possible to capture this process on film given the heat/technology involved?

I want to add some context to this picture showing the magnesium die used to apply a foil to the latest issue of BLAG. This will go into my post talking about what's inside the issue, and it's easiest to embed from Vimeo and YouTube.

Currently looking through various published pieces about Keith Knecht's life and work for a profile I'm working on for BLAG 07 (https://bl.ag/07).

The 2013 film, Sign Painters, was dedicated to Keith, and it's easy to see why; his work was outstanding, and prolific, and he consistently gave back generously to the craft that he worked at for the best part of five decades.
