Originally build in 1915 and then extended in 2013, this concrete and rockfill embankment dam provides a reservoir of potable water for the city of #Canberra, in #Australia.

It is named after Garrett Cotter, one of the original settlers in the area.

Specs:

Dam wall length 330 metres (1,080 ft)

Height = 87 m (285 ft)

Storage capacity 78 gigalitres.

Spillway discharge rate, 5,670 cubic metres per second.

‘The Shine Dome’ Australian Academy of Science.

As a 10-year-old kid scrunched down in the backseat of our Datsun 180B, it seemed totally plausible, if not probable.

“Keep down kids”, dad warned, “we are driving by the site of a crashed UFO”.

There were not as many buildings around back then. And the copper dome with its row of white lights on top seemed to stick out of the ground with a definite alien foreboding.

“I think I can see someone moving around inside…or some thing!”

Sure dad. I acted all cool and stuff in front of my sister. But I knew I would not sleep well that night, what with the way too likelihood of alien abduction.
