‘The Shine Dome’ Australian Academy of Science.

As a 10-year-old kid scrunched down in the backseat of our Datsun 180B, it seemed totally plausible, if not probable.

“Keep down kids”, dad warned, “we are driving by the site of a crashed UFO”.

There were not as many buildings around back then. And the copper dome with its row of white lights on top seemed to stick out of the ground with a definite alien foreboding.

“I think I can see someone moving around inside…or some thing!”

Sure dad. I acted all cool and stuff in front of my sister. But I knew I would not sleep well that night, what with the way too likelihood of alien abduction.

I'm off on a 7-day meditation retreat from this Saturday. There will be no pics.

See you on the other side!

Taking photos brings me into the embodied moment.

It is all about the process. It is complex.

Complex in the sense that any outcome might be larger than the sum of the components in unexpected ways.

In this sense, there is no such thing as a bad photo.

Old man tree and a poem by MS Merwin:

"Now it is clear to me that no leaves are mine

no roots are mine

that wherever I go I will be a spine of smoke in the forest

and the forest will know it

we will both know it

and that birds vanish because of something

that I remember

flying through me as though I were a great wind

as the stones settle into the ground

the trees into themselves

staring as though I were a great wind

which is what I pray for

it is clear to me that I cannot return

but that some of us will meet once more

even here

like our own statues

and some of us still later without names

and some of us will burn with the speed

of endless departures

and be found and lost no more"

Searching for ramen.

Arrived back in Tokyo this afternoon. Began search for ramen dinner immediately. In a fail of epic proportions we ended up eating pizza in a Japanese Italian cafe.

New record player. What to play first? After thinking about it all morning, I take Earth Wind and Fire for its first spin in over 30 years.

A single disc of vinyl with a single shallow groove cut into each side.

I slide the black record out of its plastic sleeve. The muscle memory is still there and my 3 middle fingers instinctively balance the centre label while my thumb lightly touches the edge.

After 30 years in darkness, there is surprisingly little dust on the surface. I tilt it into the light and a rainbow runs across it. I can see a tiny string of something, perhaps it’s a hair, and without thinking I blow on it sending a fine spray of spittle dots across tracks 3 to 5.

How can it be that the utter simplicity of this wriggly little line has held the power of EW&F’s brass section… frozen in silent symbol for all this time. Thirty years! Yet the moment the needle touches its surface the band explodes forth with power and memory.

The trumpets wail. The speakers crackle and pop and…POW, it’s 1979, and its disco, and I have flares in my trousers and a tie as wide as a banana is long.

I sit between the speakers and listen to the entirety of side 1. And I hold the album cover and I examine the art and I read all the print. And, don’t judge me here, I smell the cardboard. Above all I marvel at the depth and clarity and vibrance of the sound. It makes Apple Music on shuffle over WiFi sound like cotton wool soaked in Vegemite.

Next its Miles Davis ‘Directions’. Released in 1981, a double album of recordings made in the 1960’s and 70’s with Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea, Gil Evans, Herbie Hancock et al. Opening the album I soak in the extensive liner notes breaking down a track-by-track history of the album.

The acoustics are all velvet and black coffee as Miles riffs with the band. There are occasional pops and crackles but the music is crisp and sharp and the room fills thick with cigarette smoke and cheap scotch.

The Buddha was an ordinary(ish) dude

who spent his life trying to figure out

what was truly chill.

He meditated, a LOT.

Before he died, he told his followers

don’t follow me, follow the chill.

Figure it out for yourselves.

He also used to listen to

Miles Davis and

John Coltrane and

Stan Getz and

Kieth Jarrett.

Not live of course, he had commitments.

So he made a mixtape.

He was chill like that.
