the whole thing becomes a joke to me. i see game review/journalism as a total clown show because of, literally, this one question. and the question can't be answered objectively. when some IGN dude writes this 6 paragraph review and is all confident that Grandia II is actually real bad or whatever, it's just pathetic to me. i cannot get beyond this. i fear i have thought myself into a spot where objective analysis of almost anything is absurd to me, fraudulent even.

i've been thinking a lot recently about old JRPGs and how some (most) of them are a real slog to play now (when not on some form of meth/speed): turn-based, super-linear storytelling, little customization, etc. etc. then i was thinking, i bet there's a good essay in how classic turned-based is busted and not fun in general, and maybe there's a good case for that, right? but here's the problem, and here's the sole reason why i rarely (if ever) write "review" stuff anymore: wtf is fun????

i think we're in a book cover drought. i have not seen a truly nice looking book cover in ages. there are some OK ones, but most look AI-generated or use that pseudo-realistic-fantasy style with the smooth skin and the sex eyes; OR it's a mess of lurid text in ridiculous fonts (some even utilize multiple ridiculous fonts); OR it's that MASSIVE author name (small graphic + title) dynamic (like i know artists/writers are egomaniacs but do we need to make it this obvious?)

i imagine each chapter like an episode of a serialized anime of sorts; with a conflict, climax, and conclusion (or cliffhanger), and i plan to continue writing chapters between other projects. as always, every chapter will be available for free on my site. although, i might publish it when (and IF) i finish to see it in true book format; either way the epub/mobi/whatever will be free regardless.

there's always been a nag in the back of my skull, this urge to write a novel; it's been there for years, but i've always put it off as the prospect was too intimidating. over the last few weeks, however, i've mapped out some characters, a loose plot, and world (science fantasy loosely based on ancient greece); and i've written the first chapter (5k words), which i'll post later today.

my favorite part in this one is the hobby lobby atheist, working for a company that doesn't use barcodes because they're "the mark of the beast." the idea that we work these jobs that we are ideologically opposed to due to the nature of our society is fascinating to me (and sad, that too.)

i've never "savored" a meal, either; i just scarf stuff down. supposedly this is a dopamine thing, is what i'm reading. i guess the dopamine release trigger was more evolutionarily beneficial on the actual act of eating (biting down on stuff, swallowing) rather than just letting stuff sit in your mouth. it makes sense from that perspective but i refuse all biological explanations because they make me depressed.
