Unless it is critically necessary to the function of your software, the best thing you can do to protect trans people at this time is not collect any gender information.
There are almost zero cases where gender is relevant to the function of a piece of software. If your knee-jerk reaction is that your software does need it, please examine if that's really true, or if you just assumed.
Many non-transgender people think gender is a way to distinguish individuals. I search demographic records professionally. That isn't an adequate way to distinguish people from each other, it provides very little information. Many also feel gender is just a basic trait everything should ask about. Please recall that the safest approach to handling any sensitive data is to not store it at all.

I don't care how innovative it is to have ~technology in classrooms~, I honestly do not give a shit, I hate this and I hate having to do it and I hate going through the motions of this entire charade. Every week I go home and teach myself the material I should have learned hands-on in the lab. Is this the best we can do for students? Is this all there is? Who is this preparing? For what? I thought higher education was supposed to expand horizons, not force compliance in a very narrow range of expression like compulsory schooling. And we pay for this????

People who are like "but isn't banning too harsh" need to talk to the old guard of forums and IRC people. You could get banned from a website for saying you liked the admin's least favorite color. You could get banned because your username started with the letter P. Bring back banning honestly, it's kind of funny, we need more of it, and doing it more normalizes it for when it's needed, so you don't hesitate when it's necessary.

I know it's not the end of the world but it's embarrassing because I don't have a good reason for it and I have an otherwise spotless record in this class. I test extremely well. It's Anatomy and I'm really strong in that subject. I was so on top of all my assignments and work. All I had to do was do the exam. Anything would have been better than a zero. And I fucked it up, I didn't do it, I didn't realize it was only available for one day.
My professor is out of state for a family emergency.
